Is A Robot Takeover Likely With The Amount Of Tech In Our Homes?

Our homes are already basically controlled by robots

We like to entertain ourselves with movies and pop culture. Some may even look at them as an escape from reality. But how far away are we from becoming Will Smith in I, Robot? As technology and artificial intelligence have progressed, some may say we’re already there. 50% of people believe that a robot takeover is likely or certain to happen in the next 50 years. And the impact from sci-fi media is playing a huge role in that. An artificial intelligence survey is showing that sci-fi media has 14.5% of people more afraid of A.I.

While many may be afraid of what’s yet to come in the future, we may not be as far from that reality as we think. In fact, the survey found that 91% of people already have a virtual assistant in their homes. Some of the most popular assistants include Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and Microsoft Cortana.

If voice activated assistants aren’t your thing, you probably at least have a smart device in your home. Ranging from smart TVs, speakers, lights, and even thermostats, smart devices have become increasingly popular and modern. The simple ability to adjust your thermostat from an app on your phone is enough to make any person buy one! Smart devices are now even completing chores, as robot vacuum cleaners are staples in many homes now. Having the ability to be scheduled to vacuum and mop while you’re gone and allowing you to come back to a clean home without putting in the work is a big selling point.

At what point do we allow artificial intelligence to stop doing chores? And at what point do we allow them to do more and take a load off of our plates? The survey dove into what parts of life people wished they could automate.

While we all tend to love our families, sometimes you just need a break. In this case, many could use an extra hand. Respondents said when it comes to family, the activities they would choose to automate would include diaper changing, school drop-off and pick up, and feeding vegetables and healthy food to their children. Automating family activities was the most interesting aspect of life to the respondents. After all, who wouldn’t want a robotic assistant doing all of your “dirty work”? Pun intended.

The next most appealing aspect of life to automate is finances. People wish they could set spending limits for themselves, spending limits for their family members, and the awkward conversation of having to ask a friend or family member for money that they owe you.

People also wish that they could automate their traveling, which revealed some interesting insights. Survey respondents said they wish they could make traffic lights change in their favor, automate fueling their cars, and even be able to have a pause/play function for their rideshare driver’s voice! While all sounds very appealing, I do wonder how traffic lights could work in everyone’s favor without causing a huge ruckus on the road.

The final part of life that people want to automate is their career. Things they would like to control would be the first hour of their workday, asking for a promotion, and even having the ability to press pause or play for their boss’ voice.

The survey shed light on the advancement of A.I. and how we use it today. While we tell Alexa that we’re home when we walk through the door, we still wish we could have a robot be able to handle the first hour of work for us.
