For years, India held a paradoxical position in the global digital economy: it was the world’s largest market for mobile app downloads, yet one of the most difficult places for developers to generate significant revenue. That narrative is rapidly changing. According to a new report by app intelligence firm Sensor Tower, India’s mobile app market generated a record $345 million in consumer spending during the second quarter of 2026, marking a 35% increase from the same period last year.

This surge signals a pivotal shift in user behavior. Indian consumers are increasingly willing to pay for premium digital services, moving beyond the ad-supported, free-to-play model that long dominated the landscape. The growth is being driven less by gaming and more by generative AI, streaming entertainment, and productivity tools.

A Monetization Boom Outpacing the World

The record-breaking quarter builds on a broader trend of rising monetization efficiency. While quarterly app downloads have stabilized at approximately 6.3 billion since 2023, the revenue per download has more than doubled over the past three and a half years. This indicates that while the user base is no longer expanding exponentially, the value extracted from each user is growing significantly.

“India today is a rapidly evolving mobile market with a large user base and a growing willingness to pay for digital services,” said Eve Chen, an insights analyst at Sensor Tower.

India’s growth trajectory is currently outpacing other major economies. In Q2 2026, India recorded the fastest app revenue growth among major markets. By comparison:

  • Mexico: 30% growth

  • Turkey: 25% growth

  • United States: 3% decline

“These figures suggest that India is no longer just the world’s largest market by downloads, but is also emerging as one of the fastest-growing markets for app monetization,” Chen noted.

The Drivers: UPI, AI, and Subscriptions

Several structural and cultural factors are fueling this change. The widespread adoption of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and digital wallets has drastically reduced friction for in-app purchases. Once a major barrier to monetization, payment infrastructure is now seamless, encouraging users to subscribe to services rather than rely on pirated or free alternatives.

Generative AI has emerged as a primary revenue driver. In Q2 2026, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude accounted for nearly 83% of India’s AI app revenue. While the initial hype has cooled slightly, with ChatGPT’s daily revenue in India dropping from roughly $80,000 last October to about $60,000 currently, the volume remains staggering. Appfigures estimates ChatGPT attracted around 1.8 million downloads in India over the past month alone.

Non-gaming categories are also taking the lead. In the first half of 2026, non-gaming apps accounted for 68% of mobile app revenue in India, up from 58% three years prior. Key beneficiaries include:

  • Cloud Storage: Google One became the highest-grossing mobile app in India during the quarter.

  • Streaming: Platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Sony LIV, and JioHotstar saw sustained increases in subscriber spending.

  • Productivity: Tools that enhance professional and personal efficiency are seeing higher retention and conversion rates.

Interestingly, gaming revenue in India bucked the global trend, rising 3.7% from the previous quarter even as worldwide gaming spend declined.

Room for Long-Term Growth

Despite the rapid progress, India still trails mature markets in absolute monetization terms. Revenue per download in India remains a fraction of that in:

  • Japan: $6.10

  • United States: $4.60

  • South Korea: $3.90

However, analysts argue that the trajectory is more important than the current baseline. The steady improvement in monetization suggests significant headroom for long-term growth as the middle class expands and digital literacy deepens.

Ariel Michaeli, founder and CEO of app intelligence firm Appfigures, noted that while the pace of subscription growth has slowed after an AI-fueled surge, the fundamentals remain strong. “The numbers are still staggering,” Michaeli said, emphasizing that the initial excitement around AI has abated into a sustainable, albeit slower, growth pattern.

As India transitions from a volume-driven market to a value-driven one, global developers and investors are taking note. The era of ignoring India’s monetization potential is over; the next chapter of the global app economy will likely be written in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
