Before we look at how to make money from web traffic, let’s just have a quick recap of what traffic means and why it is so important to your business... then we will examine how you can use traffic to make money.

What is web traffic

The term web traffic has two main meanings. First, web traffic refers to visitors to your website. Second, it is often used more specifically to mean people who come to your site by typing in your website address using a web browser. The first definition applies regardless of how you get people to your site; visitors are visitors whether they click on a Google ad, click on a link from another website or search for you on Google and then type in your address. In other words, if you pay for advertising that sends visitors to your site (called paid search), it's still considered web traffic. On the other hand, if people find you through word-of-mouth recommendations or links from other websites (called organic search), these are also considered web traffic.

Why web traffic is important

Even if your business is selling offline, you need to have a website in place. A website can boost your sales by serving as an information portal for prospects who may be searching online for your products or services. It’s also a great way to establish your credibility and demonstrate that you are a real business with an established history. Web visitors typically convert at lower rates than customers coming from other sources, but they tend to spend more per order than phone or email leads. Plus, getting someone’s contact information is relatively easy once they visit your site, so it can lead to increased future sales opportunities as well!

Step 1 - Define your goals

Before you start looking for ways to increase your web traffic, you need to define what you are trying to achieve with it. Web traffic is free and cheap so there is no point in spending lots of time and money on it if your site or project has no purpose. Your goals will drive your strategy when looking for ways to increase your web traffic; they will dictate which methods are right for you. Are you trying to improve search engine rankings, generate more qualified leads, grow an email list, etc.? Whatever it is that you want from your site visitors, there is a way of reaching them online - although some methods may suit certain goals better than others.

Step 2 - Get Found

You must first be found on Google, Bing and Yahoo! for your targeted keywords if you want organic traffic to your site. To do that, you will need to have a presence on their search engines either via paid search advertising (Google Adwords) or getting listed in their directories. I recommend learning how to do both because although they can be very expensive tools, it is worth it when you start seeing all of your online marketing costs diminishing with that free organic traffic that is pouring into your site every day.

Step 3 - Know your audience

When people come to a website, they are usually in a hurry. They have things to do and places to go, so anything that can be done on their behalf will be greatly appreciated. They may not be trying to do business with you, but if you provide them with what they need quickly and easily, your chances of converting that person into a client or customer grow dramatically. For example, let’s say someone comes across your site searching for something like: how to get rid of hiccups or how long does it take for hiccups to stop? You know from your research earlier in Step 2 - Know Your Audience that there is a lot of interest in certain topics related to those phrases.

Step 4 - Create valuable content

Now that you’ve written your first draft of your content, go back and edit it. After that, start promoting it by using tactics like guest blogging, building relationships with industry influencers and promoting it to your email list (if you have one). If you don’t have an email list yet, I recommend starting with a free service like MailChimp. It has a variety of templates to use for newsletters. The next step is scaling up from there by finding a way to get consistent referral traffic from search engines. This could be done through SEO or social media marketing (like Facebook Ads or Twitter ads). In time, these tactics can help take your business and website to another level.

Step 5 - Drive Traffic

Use various strategies to get users to your website, who will then hopefully convert into sales. PPC (pay per click) is an online advertising model that uses a bidding system between advertisers and search engines. You can bid on certain keywords that are relevant to your business, for example, buy best dog food, best price for dog food or best price for dog food in Singapore. By doing so, you're directly able to get your advert in front of people who have searched for those words. Traffic resulting from PPC will usually be cost-effective as you only pay when someone clicks on your adverts.

Step 6 - Build an email list

Once you’ve written a few articles, publish them to your website and distribute your content. Start with links from other websites, ask influencers to share your work, post it on Reddit and Medium (especially if you're targeting an audience that frequents these sites). You can also promote your own posts by sharing them on Twitter and Facebook. Having an email list will help deliver fresh new content straight to subscribers’ inboxes on a regular basis; not only is it more convenient for them but also helps build loyalty which makes people more likely to click links in any emails that you send. When someone clicks through one of these emails, they'll land directly on your website where they can convert into leads or customers.

Step 7 - Measure results

You should have a Google Analytics account. You will have to have a place to store your keyword lists. I use and recommend Drive as it integrates with Google Docs & Sheets. You can also upload your keyword lists directly into whichever other analytics program you are using. Just make sure that you have some way of storing all of your keywords, whether they are on spreadsheets or in one central location like Drive. At some point in time, you should download all of these keyword lists into Excel for easy sorting and access across different devices.

What may have worked two years ago might not be effective today. But don’t worry; in business, everything is always evolving.
