If you have been itching to build your own website, but never thought it would be an easy or affordable task, think again! Today I’m going to show you how to build a simple personal website in under an hour, using only free online tools (plus your email address). Best of all, this tutorial can be used by anyone – whether you’re completely new to the whole website-building thing or you’re trying to create something more complex and need some helpful hints along the way.

Choose your platform

The process of building your site is going to be different depending on what platform you decide on. WordPress, Wix and Squarespace are three easy-to-use options, but there are also more advanced platforms like Drupal and Joomla. A hosting package will come with your chosen platform so there’s no need to worry about that just yet.

All the above services offer a free trial period (usually 14 days) which should give you plenty of time to try out the software and make sure it suits your needs.

Pick a domain name

Now that you have your idea and you're ready to start building your website, the next step is deciding on what domain name to use. This is one of the first decisions you will make when creating your site. If you already know what domain name you want, enter it into this field. Otherwise, type whatever words come to mind (even if they don't seem relevant) and click see available domains. You can also get a feel for how many websites are using certain domains by typing them into Google's search bar.

The list of available domains will appear below your input box automatically as you type, so just scroll through until something grabs your attention!

Choose your hosting

Choosing your hosting can be difficult, but it's important that you find the right one for you. There are many different types of hosting services and they all have their own pros and cons. If you're just starting out, it's recommended that you choose managed hosting so you don't have to worry about technicalities. Managed hosting companies will take care of updates and security patches on their own. Once you've decided on a type of hosting service, it's time to pick a company.

Design your website

Designing a unique website can be done in less than an hour. The first step is deciding what you want your site to look like and what it will offer. This is important because the design of your site should match the style of your company. Next, you need to decide whether or not you want a domain name and hosting service. Once this has been decided, search for templates that fit the style of your site and choose one that you find appealing. It’s time to upload content and add the design elements that really make it unique. Don’t forget to have fun with it!
