Australia and India compete in a Test cricket series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. It bears the names of two of India's and Australia's best cricketers, Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar, respectively. Every time Australia and India play a Test series, the 1996-original trophy is contested.

The series has generated some remarkable moments over the years and is regarded as one of the most significant cricket matches between two nations. Both teams have seen success at various periods in the closely contested wars that the two teams have been a part of.

India's historic series victory in Australia in 2020–21, which was their first ever Test series victory in Australia, is just one of the highlights of the Border–Gavaskar Trophy over the years.

The first Test was won by India by 13 runs in Chennai, ending a closely contested series. Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble both put up outstanding performances. A stunning century by Michael Slater in the fourth innings helped Australia recover to win the second Test in Kolkata by 8 wickets.

The first Border-Gavaskar Trophy match took place in 1996–1997, during Australia's three–match Test series in India. In honour of the accomplishments made by two renowned cricketers, Allan Border of Australia and Sunil Gavaskar of India, the series was given their names.

The first Test was won by India by 13 runs in Chennai, ending a closely contested series. Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble both put up outstanding performances. A stunning century by Michael Slater in the fourth innings helped Australia recover to win the second Test in Kolkata by 8 wickets.

When India visited Australia for a three-match Test series in 1998–1999, the second Border–Gavaskar Trophy was competed. Because the first meeting between the two teams ended in a draw, the series was eagerly anticipated.

Both teams scored more than 400 runs in their first innings during the first Test in Melbourne, which resulted in a high-scoring tie. Australia easily prevailed in the second Test match in Perth thanks to Mark Waugh's magnificent double century and Shane Warne's eight wickets.

India came agonisingly close to winning the third Test in Adelaide, which was a closely contested encounter. India needed just one run to win with one wicket remaining after setting a goal of 233 runs, however they failed to do so.

India hosted Australia for a three-match Test series in 2000-01, which served as the setting for the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy match. The series generated several amazing moments and is regarded as one of the best Test series ever.

The first Test in Mumbai resulted in a tie, with India nearly defeating Australia but being stopped by their tenacious defence. After being asked to follow-on by Australia, India made one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the game to win the second test in Kolkata. VVS Laxman scored 281 runs in one of the finest innings in Test history, and Rahul Dravid wonderfully assisted him with a 180-run performance.

India won the third Test in Chennai.

Australia hosted India for a four-match Test series in 2003–04, which featured the fourth Border–Gavaskar Trophy match. India was the first side to travel Australia since they won the 2003 Cricket World Cup, hence the series was much anticipated.

Australia easily won the first Test in Brisbane thanks to Matthew Hayden's outstanding double century in the first innings. India nearly won the second Test in Adelaide, but tenacious Australian batting prevented it. The match finished in a tie.

With Steve Waugh making a century in his final Test match, Australia won the third Test in Melbourne. Australia won the fourth Test match in Sydney as well, with Ricky Ponting striking a double century .
