Groq Raises $350M at $3.5B Valuation as It Pivots from AI Chipmaker to Neocloud Provider

Startup Groq has raised $350 million as it continues to pivot from an AI chipmaker to a neocloud company that provides powerful GPUs and AI infrastructure services.

The new capital, led by investment firm Disruptive with planned participation from Nvidia, values the company at $3.5 billion. That's down from the $6.9 billion Groq was valued at last September, just a few months before Nvidia hired the startup's founder and CEO, Jonathan Ross, and other top talent as part of a $20 billion licensing deal that the company paid out to investors.


A New Chapter for Groq

A spokesperson for the company told TechCrunch that despite the difference in valuation, the company doesn't see it as a down round, but rather as establishing a new valuation for the "post-Nvidia-licensing-deal version of Groq."

This distinction is important. The $20 billion licensing deal with Nvidia fundamentally transformed Groq's business and its leadership team. The loss of its founder and top talent represented a significant change that required a new valuation to reflect the company's new reality.

The $6.9 billion valuation from September 2025 reflected a company that was building its own chips (LPUs) and competing directly with Nvidia in the inference market. Today, Groq operates 13 data centers across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific, serving more than 6 million developers, enterprises, and AI-native companies. This global footprint positions Groq as a significant player in the AI infrastructure market.

The neocloud market has become increasingly competitive, with companies like CoreWeave, Lambda, and Nebius also providing AI infrastructure services. These companies rely on Nvidia's GPUs to power their clouds, creating a symbiotic relationship with the chipmaker.

Nvidia's Role in Groq's Transformation

"Inference will without a doubt become the largest and most critical layer of AI infrastructure," Alex Davis, Groq's chairman and CEO of Disruptive, said in a statement. This reflects the growing importance of inference in the AI market.

While training large AI models has been the primary focus of AI investment in recent years, inference the process of running those models in production is expected to become the largest market segment. As AI models are deployed more widely, the demand for inference capacity is expected to grow significantly.

Groq's focus on inference positions it well for this market trend. However, the pivot to operating Nvidia systems means that Groq is now competing with other neocloud providers that also offer inference services.


The Challenge of Profitability

While inference is in high demand as enterprises scale AI workloads, it's an open question whether neoclouds will be a profitable enough business to provide returns on their considerable investment in the long term.

CoreWeave, one of the leading neocloud providers, reported strong second-quarter revenue growth and recently landed major contracts, including with Meta and Anthropic. However, investors remained concerned about the company's high capital expenditures, heavy reliance on debt, and exposure to rapidly depreciating hardware, and its ability to turn growth into free cash flow.

These concerns are relevant to Groq as well. The neocloud business is capital-intensive, requiring significant investment in data centers, hardware, and infrastructure. The rapid pace of technological change also means that hardware can become outdated quickly, creating a risk of asset write-downs.

Groq's financials are still private for now, so it's unclear how the company is performing relative to its competitors. However, the challenges faced by CoreWeave suggest that the neocloud business model is not without risks.


Groq's Strategic Position

Groq's pivot puts the company directly inside Nvidia's AI infrastructure ecosystem. That's not exactly a unique relationship among neoclouds today. Nvidia supplies the GPUs powering clouds from CoreWeave, Lambda, and Nebius, while also investing billions into some of those companies as they race to build more capacity.

By positioning itself within Nvidia's ecosystem, Groq benefits from access to Nvidia's cutting-edge chips and the broader Nvidia partner network. However, this also means that Groq's success is tied to Nvidia's success, and any disruption to Nvidia's business could have ripple effects for Groq.

The competition among neocloud providers is intensifying, with companies racing to build more capacity and attract more customers. Groq will need to differentiate itself through its service quality, reliability, and pricing to compete effectively.


The Future of AI Infrastructure

The AI infrastructure market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, driven by the increasing adoption of AI across all industries. As enterprises scale their AI workloads, the demand for compute capacity will continue to rise.

Neocloud providers like Groq play a critical role in meeting this demand. By providing cloud-based AI infrastructure services, they make it easier for enterprises and AI companies to access the compute capacity they need without having to build and maintain their own data centers.

However, the profitability of the neocloud business model remains uncertain. The high capital expenditure requirements and the risk of hardware depreciation are significant challenges that neocloud providers will need to navigate.
