Google Pulls Earth AI Feature Just 24 Hours After Launch Amid Misinformation Backlash
The tech giant rolls back the ability to generate synthetic imagery within Google Earth after critics warned the tool could undermine the platform’s role as a trusted source of geospatial evidence
Google has abruptly removed its new AI-powered image generation feature from Google Earth, just one day after its release, following intense criticism that the tool could facilitate the spread of misinformation and erode trust in satellite imagery.
The feature, which launched on Thursday, allowed users to utilize "Nano Banana 2," Google’s latest AI image generator, to create and superimpose fabricated images directly onto real-world maps within the Google Earth interface. According to Google, the intention was to encourage creativity and allow users to visualize hypothetical geographical changes or artistic concepts. However, the prompt-based tool effectively enabled anyone to alter the visual reality of any location on the planet with minimal effort.
A "Recipe for Geospatial Slop"
The backlash was swift and severe. Critics, including journalists, researchers, and geospatial professionals, argued that integrating generative AI into one of the world’s most relied-upon sources of visual evidence was dangerously misguided. Google Earth has long been a critical tool for verifying news events, monitoring environmental changes, and conducting academic research. By allowing easy manipulation of this data, critics feared the feature would blur the line between fact and fiction.
“There’s no way that this new AI image generation feature on Google Earth, one of the most reliable sources of visual evidence for journalists and researchers, could be abused to spread misinformation online,” a BBC journalist posted sarcastically on social media shortly after the launch, highlighting the absurdity of the risk.
Many pointed out that the tool seemed like a "recipe for a deluge of geospatial slop," where fabricated disasters, political propaganda, or fake infrastructure projects could be created and shared as if they were real satellite captures. In an era where deepfakes and AI-generated content already challenge public trust, adding a layer of plausible but false geographic imagery to a trusted platform raised immediate red flags.
Google’s Quick Reversal
Recognizing the potential for abuse, Google acted quickly. On Friday, less than 24 hours after the rollout, the company announced it was rolling back the feature.
“We’ve seen geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes; however we’ve also seen people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies,” Google said in a statement. “We’re rolling back this feature in Google Earth while we work on implementing stronger guardrails.”
The company did not specify what those "stronger guardrails" might look like, but industry experts suggest they could include watermarks, metadata tagging to identify AI-generated content, or restrictions on what types of prompts can be used within the mapping interface.
The Broader Context of AI and Truth
While Google’s decision to pull the feature was prudent, the incident underscores a broader challenge in the age of artificial intelligence: the ease with which reality can be manipulated. As noted by critics, you no longer need advanced Photoshop skills to create semi-credible disinformation; access to consumer-grade AI image generators is enough. Google itself sells such tools, as do numerous other tech firms, making the proliferation of synthetic media inevitable.
However, the integration of these tools into platforms dedicated to factual representation like mapping services requires a higher standard of care. Unlike social media feeds where users expect curated or altered content, Google Earth is perceived as an objective record of the physical world. Compromising that perception can have real-world consequences, from confusing emergency responders to fueling conspiracy theories.
For now, Google Earth will return to its traditional function as a window into the real world. But the brief experiment serves as a cautionary tale for tech companies eager to integrate generative AI into every product: when it comes to truth and geography, creativity must not come at the cost of credibility.
