Dyson’s £420 Camera Jet Toothbrush Uses AI, a Camera and Water Jets to Clean Your Teeth

Dyson’s latest high-tech toothbrush aims to tackle poor brushing and flossing habits with smart camera technology, targeted mouthwash jets and app-connected dental tracking.

Dyson has built its reputation by taking ordinary household products and turning them into expensive pieces of futuristic technology. From bagless vacuum cleaners to hair dryers and air purifiers, the company rarely does things the conventional way.

Now, according to a recent television segment, Dyson is taking that same approach to something millions of people use every morning and night: the toothbrush.

The new device, referred to in the segment as the Dyson Camera Jet, is described as a high-tech electric toothbrush equipped with AI technology, a tiny camera and a system capable of directing jets of liquid between the teeth.

The biggest talking point, however, may be the price.

It reportedly costs around £420.

What Makes the Dyson Camera Jet Toothbrush Different?

Electric toothbrushes are nothing new. Companies such as Oral-B and Philips have been producing advanced models with pressure sensors, cleaning modes, timers and smartphone connectivity for years.

Dyson's approach appears to focus heavily on cleaning the spaces between the teeth.

The Camera Jet reportedly contains a small camera that can identify gaps as the user brushes. When the system detects one, it can automatically direct a concentrated jet of water or mouthwash into that area.

The idea is to remove debris while also delivering an antibacterial rinse to places that a conventional toothbrush may struggle to reach.

Most importantly, the user apparently does not have to manually activate the jet every time.

The toothbrush detects the gap and responds automatically.

A Tiny Camera Lets You See Inside Your Mouth

The built-in camera also connects with an accompanying app.

According to the demonstration, users can view areas of their teeth in a way similar to the perspective a dentist might see during an examination.

For people who enjoy tracking health information through smartphones and wearable devices, that feature could make dental care feel much more interactive.

It could also encourage users to pay closer attention to areas they normally ignore while brushing.

Of course, whether most people actually want to watch themselves brushing their teeth through an app is another question entirely.

Dyson Wants to Solve a Common Dental Problem

The technology may sound excessive, but it is targeting a very ordinary problem: many people simply do not spend enough time cleaning their teeth properly.

The television discussion highlighted concerns about people failing to floss regularly and brushing for far less than the commonly recommended two minutes.

That is where Dyson's automatic jet system becomes interesting.

Instead of expecting users to finish brushing and then separately floss or use another interdental-cleaning device, the toothbrush attempts to handle more of the process during brushing itself.

Convenience could ultimately be one of its biggest selling points.

Is a £420 Toothbrush Really Necessary?

That depends on what you expect from a toothbrush.

During the segment, several significantly cheaper electric toothbrushes were compared with the Dyson device.

Premium alternatives from Philips and Oral-B were mentioned, but so were basic rechargeable electric toothbrushes costing well below £50.

The message was clear: spending hundreds of pounds is not necessary to start using an electric toothbrush.

A basic model can still perform the most important job.

The Dyson Camera Jet is aimed more at buyers who want advanced technology, convenience and additional oral-health features in a single device.

Premium Electric Toothbrush Prices Can Fall Quickly

Another interesting point raised during the discussion was how dramatically premium toothbrush prices can fall after launch.

High-end models that initially entered the market at extremely expensive prices were shown selling for substantially less later.

That could be particularly important for anyone interested in Dyson's new toothbrush but unwilling to pay £420.

Early adopters may pay a significant premium simply for having the newest technology.

Consumers willing to wait could potentially get a much better deal later if the product follows the pricing patterns seen elsewhere in the premium electric-toothbrush market.

Do Electric Toothbrushes Actually Work Better?

A dentist appearing during the segment argued that electric toothbrushes can offer measurable advantages.

Research discussed on the programme suggested that electric brushes can help reduce plaque and gingivitis compared with manual brushing.

However, the dentist also stressed something much more basic.

Buying an expensive toothbrush does not matter if people are not brushing consistently.

Brushing twice a day and spending enough time cleaning every surface of the teeth remains more important than simply owning the latest technology.

Flossing and Interdental Cleaning Still Matter

Even an advanced toothbrush has limitations.

A standard brush can clean the front, back and biting surfaces of teeth, but reaching the spaces between them is more difficult.

That is why floss and interdental brushes remain important parts of oral hygiene.

Dyson's water-jet technology appears to be attempting to address exactly that problem.

If it can reliably detect gaps and clean them automatically while someone brushes, it could make interdental cleaning easier for people who rarely floss.

The dentist in the segment also recommended interdental brushes where appropriate, particularly for removing material trapped between teeth.

For tighter gaps, conventional floss or floss picks may still be useful.

What About Mouthwash?

Interestingly, the discussion also challenged one common dental habit.

The dentist advised users not to immediately rinse toothpaste away after brushing because doing so can remove beneficial ingredients left behind on the teeth.

Instead, the recommendation was to spit out excess toothpaste without immediately rinsing.

Mouthwash can still be used separately, such as at another point during the day.

That creates another interesting question around Dyson's toothbrush because its jet system can apparently use mouthwash directly while cleaning between the teeth.

Smart Dental Technology Is Becoming a Bigger Market

There is also a cultural reason why a £420 toothbrush might not seem as ridiculous today as it would have twenty years ago.

Teeth have increasingly become part of the wider beauty and personal-care market.

Social media platforms, influencers and reality television have helped make bright smiles and cosmetic dental treatments much more visible.

Consumers already spend substantial amounts on whitening products, aligners, cosmetic dentistry and premium electric toothbrushes.

Dyson may therefore be entering the category at exactly the right moment.

The Camera Jet Is Impressive, but It Is Not Essential

From a technology perspective, Dyson's Camera Jet sounds impressive.

A camera capable of identifying spaces between teeth, an automatic targeted cleaning jet and app-connected feedback could make brushing more effective and potentially more engaging.

But the television demonstration also showed that effective electric toothbrushes are available at a fraction of the price.

Ultimately, the £420 Dyson Camera Jet appears to be less about whether people need an expensive toothbrush and more about whether smart technology can persuade them to take better care of their teeth.

If a camera, an app and an automatic water jet encourage someone to brush properly for two minutes and clean between their teeth consistently, Dyson may have found a genuine use for all that technology.

For everyone else, a much cheaper electric toothbrush — combined with good brushing habits and regular interdental cleaning — may still be more than enough.
