Basic Internet

Had there been no internet in our lives, we would have been living very diffident lives. Hence, we must understand what the internet is and all the terms and concepts relating to it. Although it is nearly impossible to know all the concepts and ideas in one article alone, we can still try and give it a shot. But before that, we must understand about some Internet service providers in the USA, such as Spectrum. The spectrum internet packages are exclusive for internet, phone, TV, and all three together.

Some of the basic internet terms are as follows:

Domain

Every computer and its user have its own unique address known as the “domain.” It recognizes the IP addresses and has a specific pattern. An example of a domain is www.google.com. Some of the other domains are listed below:

• .com for Commercial business

• .edu for Educational institutions

• .gov for Government agencies

• .mil for Military

• .net for Networks organization

• .org for Organizations

Browser

A browser is a piece of software that allows the user to access and display the relevant search results, including everything like documents, pictures, sound, video clips, and other data from the World Wide Web.

E-mail

E-mail is an electronically transmitted mail that is sent and received by and on the computer. As opposed to traditional mail, it takes only a few moments to send your messages and documents anytime, anywhere in the world over the internet.

File Transfer Protocol

We often come across the word FTP – which actually stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a standard method that we employ to upload files over the internet and download them from the internet. FTP allows you to transfer (send or receive) files by logging into a server.

Homepage

As the browser starts, a page opens in front of us. We call it the Homepage. With reference to the website, it is the main page that provides the introduction and the subsequent pages’ links.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)

You must have noticed that almost every website starts with HTTP. HTTP actually stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It is a collection of rules and regulations, allowing the webpages to transfer information all over the internet.

Internet Protocol Address (IP)

We generally call it IP Address. The IP address has a certain pattern of numbers that are separated explicitly by periods. Each computer on the internet has a particular set of unique numbers: its IP Address. The general way of IP address goes like xxx.xxx.xxx.xx

Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

A Uniform Resource Locator, or more commonly known as the URL, is the address used to locate resources or services on the web.

Website

A website is a group of World Wide Web pages or files. It has a sitemap that shows different components or parts of a site. For example, www.yahoo.com is a website.

Web Page

A web page is a hypertext file or a page and is generally a part of the main website. It can be an individual services page, or a blog page, or something else. Every page has its own URL. For example, for the blog page, the website goes like www.domainname.com/blog

The Verdict

As you have seen that although we use the internet 24/7 for literally everything we do, there is still stuff that we do not know about the internet most importantly its history and the progress. However, we must know the little details about the internet – at least the basics that could help us in daily life. Apart from the elements mentioned here, there’s a lot that makes the internet what it is. We can at least try to grasp some of the basic concepts though!
