Disney+ Considering a Free Streaming Tier, Report Says
Disney+ is considering making some of its streaming library available to watch for free, according to a report from Business Insider.
Disney's chief product and technology officer, Adam Smith, discussed the possibility of offering free-tier content during a town hall on Thursday, the report says. It's unknown which shows or movies would be included or when the streaming platform would consider launching the offering.
The rollout of free content would allow Disney+ to better compete with free services like YouTube and Tubi, which are capturing a growing share of consumers' viewing time.
The Shift Toward Free Streaming
As streaming giants continue to raise prices, consumers have been turning to ad-supported services. According to data from Nielsen, free streaming services represented 18.7% of U.S. television watch time in April 2026, rising from 16.8% in April 2025 and 12.7% in April 2024.
Period Free Streaming Viewing Share April 2024 12.7% April 2025 16.8% April 2026 18.7%
The trend reflects a broader shift in consumer behaviour. With subscription fatigue setting in and household budgets under pressure, viewers are increasingly willing to tolerate ads in exchange for free access to content.
Disney+ has already introduced an ad-supported tier, but a completely free offering would mark a significant strategic shift for the company, which has largely relied on its premium brand and exclusive content to drive subscriptions.
Competing in a Crowded Market
By offering select free content to consumers, Disney+ could better differentiate itself from its streaming peers like Netflix and Amazon Prime, especially as Apple TV+ and Paramount+ already allow non-subscribers to access a few free episodes.
The move would position Disney+ alongside services like Tubi, Pluto TV, and the Roku Channel, which have built large audiences on the strength of their free, ad-supported models. YouTube, which remains the dominant free video platform, continues to capture a significant share of viewer attention.
For Disney, the challenge will be to strike the right balance. Offering too much free content could cannibalise subscriptions. Offering too little could fail to attract new viewers. The company will need to carefully curate what it makes available for free.
The Potential Library
It's unknown which shows or movies would be included in a free tier. Disney+ has a vast library that includes:
Marvel Cinematic Universe films and series
Star Wars content
Disney classics and animated features
National Geographic documentaries
Pixar films
The Simpsons
The company could choose to offer older content, select episodes of popular series, or limited-time access to specific titles as a way to hook potential subscribers. It could also follow the model of services like Peacock, which offers a limited free tier with ads and a premium tier for full access.
Why Now?
The timing of the discussion reflects broader challenges facing the streaming industry. After years of rapid growth, subscriber numbers have begun to plateau. Consumers are increasingly selective about which services they subscribe to, leading to a wave of cancellations.
Disney+ reported its first subscriber loss in 2022, and while it has since recovered, the company is under pressure to find new ways to grow its user base. A free tier could help attract price-sensitive consumers who might later convert to paying subscribers.
The move would also allow Disney to compete more effectively with YouTube, which has become the default destination for free video content. Younger viewers, in particular, have gravitated toward free platforms, and Disney needs to capture their attention.
Disney+ is exploring a free streaming tier as the company looks for new ways to grow its audience and compete in an increasingly crowded market. The move reflects broader trends in the streaming industry, where consumers are increasingly gravitating toward free, ad-supported options.
If implemented, the free tier could be a game-changer for Disney+, allowing it to reach a wider audience and build a pipeline of potential subscribers. However, the company will need to be careful not to undermine its premium brand or cannibalise its existing subscriber base.
