Australia's Biggest Data Centre Company Just Opened a RM2.8 Billion Facility in KL and It's Built for AI
Malaysia just got a significant vote of confidence from the global tech world.

NEXTDC, Australia's leading digital infrastructure company, officially launched its first data centre outside of Australia this week and they chose Kuala Lumpur. The facility, called KL1, is located in the Klang Valley and represents a long-term investment of approximately RM2.8 billion, or AUD$1 billion.
It's a big deal for Malaysia, and an even bigger deal for NEXTDC, which has spent over a decade building out Australia's most advanced data centre network and is now making its first move into Southeast Asia.
What Makes KL1 Special
This isn't just a regular data centre. KL1 has been purpose-built specifically for AI workloads and high-performance computing the kind of heavy-duty infrastructure that companies need when they're running large-scale AI operations that cannot afford to go offline.
The facility is designed to deliver 65MW of IT capacity, which is a substantial amount of power for a single site. More notably, KL1 is on track to become the first Uptime Institute Tier IV-certified data centre in Peninsular Malaysia. Tier IV is the highest possible standard in the industry, meaning the facility is built to stay running no matter what full redundancy, no single point of failure, maximum resilience.
In plain terms: if you're a company running mission-critical AI systems and you cannot afford downtime, this is the kind of infrastructure you need.
Why Malaysia?
NEXTDC didn't pick KL by accident. Malaysia has been quietly positioning itself as one of Southeast Asia's most attractive destinations for digital infrastructure investment, backed by strong economic growth, rising enterprise demand, and the government's own push to accelerate AI adoption nationally.
Minister of Digital Gobind Singh Deo welcomed the launch, framing it as a key piece of Malaysia's AI Nation 2030 ambitions. "This RM2.8 billion investment not only reinforces global investor confidence in our digital ecosystem but also ensures that Malaysia remains at the forefront of the global value chain," he said.
The Klang Valley location also gives KL1 a natural role as a regional connectivity hub a place where companies operating across Southeast Asia can anchor their infrastructure while staying compliant with local data and regulatory requirements.
The Australia Connection
There's also a broader geopolitical dimension to this. NEXTDC's expansion into Malaysia strengthens what the company describes as an Australia-Asia digital corridor, giving Australian businesses a trusted foothold to expand their regional operations. The Australian Government is actively supporting the move as part of its Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, and Australian High Commissioner Danielle Heinecke was present at the launch.
NEXTDC CEO Craig Scroggie put it plainly: "This is not only about entering a new market. It is about NEXTDC establishing infrastructure platforms in the locations where customers need to operate, connect and scale in the AI economy."
What It Means for Malaysia
Beyond the technical specs and corporate strategy, the real-world impact for Malaysia is significant. A facility of this size and calibre is expected to attract further foreign investment, support the growth of the local digital industry, and create high-value jobs in the technology sector.
For a country that has been actively courting global tech giants and largely succeeding KL1 is another strong signal that Malaysia's ambitions to become the digital hub of Southeast Asia are gaining serious traction.
The facility is now open, and NEXTDC is already inviting companies to connect with their team and book tours of what is shaping up to be one of the most advanced data centres in the region.
