Apple’s Foldable Repair Bill Is 7,998 Yuan for One Screen. That’s Half the Phone.
The iPhone Duo’s inner screen costs 4.4 times Huawei’s Pura X Max replacement, and AppleCare+ adds 2,599 yuan before it drops the repair to 628 yuan.

Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, has not gone on sale. Its repair prices already have.
Apple’s website lists out-of-warranty repair estimates: 7,998 yuan for inner screen damage, 4,298 yuan for outer screen and back glass damage together, 1,898 yuan for a battery, and up to 11,998 yuan for other damage. The iPhone Duo starts at 15,999 yuan in mainland China. One inner screen costs 50% of the phone. One battery costs 1,898 yuan, the highest battery price for an iPhone.
Apple customer service says the titanium body costs more to make and process, the screen surface uses a nano-texture process, and the phone has two batteries that are harder to remove and calibrate.
Those points explain part of the price. The market comparison explains the rest.
For comparison: Apple’s screen replacement fee can buy four Huawei inner screens. The iPhone Duo costs 7,998 yuan, about 50% of the phone. Huawei Mate XT 2 tri-fold costs 5,499 yuan for the standard version and 6,499 yuan for the privacy version for flexible screen body replacement. Huawei Mate XT tri-fold costs 4,999 yuan at a promotional price for flexible screen body replacement. Huawei Mate X5 Collector’s Edition costs 5,599 yuan for full screen assembly replacement. Huawei Pura X Max costs 1,799 yuan at a promotional price for flexible screen body replacement. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 costs about 5,556 yuan for official inner screen repair. vivo X Fold6 costs 3,780 yuan, or 2,835 yuan after a 25% first-repair discount, for the inner screen assembly. OPPO Find N6 costs about 3,500 to 4,500 yuan for the inner screen assembly.
The 7,998 yuan is 4.4 times Huawei Pura X Max’s screen replacement price. Huawei Pura X Max costs 1,799 yuan for one inner screen replacement. Apple’s one replacement is enough for four and then some. Even the structurally more complex tri-fold Huawei Mate XT 2, with its privacy version flexible screen body replacement at 6,499 yuan, is still 1,499 yuan cheaper than Apple. If Mate XT 2 replaces the entire screen assembly, including screen, mid-frame, and battery, the trade-in price is 7,999 yuan, the same as Apple’s price for replacing just one inner screen.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 inner screen repair is about 5,556 yuan. vivo X Fold6 inner screen assembly is 3,780 yuan. OPPO Find N6 is between 3,500 and 4,500 yuan. Apple’s 7,998 yuan is 45% to 130% higher than these models.
Several costs explain the 7,998 yuan price.
The screen itself. Supply chain information shows Apple pays Samsung about $250 per inner screen, about 1,800 yuan. Samsung is the sole supplier for three years, and Apple has little bargaining power in the short term. That number is more than 3.5 times the cost of a regular iPhone screen.
The whole-assembly replacement. The iPhone Duo’s inner screen and hinge are integrated and sealed. The parts are welded together. Whether the inner screen or the hinge breaks, the entire assembly must be replaced. The hinge uses more than 100 precision parts. The screen support substrate is sprayed with 25 layers of photosensitive polymer. During repair, the entire hinge assembly is removed and replaced. The cost includes the materials and assembly of the whole hinge.
Repair barrier. After foldable repair, hinge damping and opening angle must be calibrated. Third-party repair shops lack Apple’s dedicated jigs and torque testing equipment. Unauthorized disassembly can permanently ruin the screen. Liquid metal hinge calibration requires precision equipment. Inner screen panels are exclusively supplied by Samsung. Third parties can hardly get original parts.
Yield. Foxconn assembles the iPhone Duo. Mass production yield is only just over 60%. Regular iPhones exceed 90%. The hinge has more than 100 parts. Flexible screen crease control is difficult. Ramping up is slow. Component costs stay high.
Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron, said the inner screen protective layer can be replaced separately. AppleCare+ users pay only 139 yuan for that. But replacing a protective film and replacing an assembly are two different things. The core parts are still welded shut.
AppleCare+ is Apple’s answer. The two-year AppleCare+ for the iPhone Duo costs 2,599 yuan, the most expensive in the series.
With and without it, the repair cost gap is large. Without AppleCare+, inner screen damage costs 7,998 yuan. With AppleCare+, it costs 628 yuan. Outer screen damage costs 3,198 yuan without it and 188 yuan with it. Back glass damage costs 1,598 yuan without it and 188 yuan with it. Surface damage costs 398 yuan without it and 139 yuan with it. Battery service costs 1,898 yuan without it and 0 yuan with it.
Without AppleCare+, one accidental inner screen repair costs 7,998 yuan. With AppleCare+, the same repair costs 628 yuan. The difference is 7,370 yuan. AppleCare+ itself costs 2,599 yuan. After one inner screen accident, the payback multiple is nearly 3x.
Consumers can do this math. The problem is that Apple has pushed out-of-warranty repair prices to a level where users have to buy insurance. When Apple customer service responded to the repair fee controversy, it also recommended AppleCare+.
Other brands price insurance lower. Samsung Care+’s “one discounted screen replacement per year” tier costs 699 to 899 yuan. The inner screen assembly replacement under that discounted screen replacement is 499 yuan. Huawei HUAWEI Care+ charges a 468 yuan service fee for accidental screen damage during the service period. Within one year of purchase, it also offers a screen replacement benefit. A new screen assembly replacement costs 3,499 yuan.
Apple’s AppleCare+ is priced at 2,599 yuan, higher than similar services from Samsung and Huawei. The 628 yuan out-of-pocket repair cost is also higher than Huawei’s 468 yuan service fee. Apple also charges more for insurance.
After repair prices were announced, street interviews showed consumers of different age groups saying the 2,599 yuan insurance price was too high. They also said a two-year warranty alone was not worth it.
Foldables still have low market penetration. High repair costs and durability doubts are part of why. Foldable screens and precision hinges still need yield improvements. Repairs involve complex sealing strips and special materials. Third-party repair is extremely difficult. After-sales burden is one barrier for foldables moving beyond a niche market.
Counterpoint predicts Apple will sell about 6 million iPhone Duos this year. That would give Apple 25% of the global foldable market. If that happens, other brands will watch Apple’s pricing. If they follow Apple, foldable repair costs will rise. If they continue Huawei-style low-cost screen replacement, Apple’s pricing will face market pressure.
The iPhone Duo’s 7,998 yuan screen replacement fee is nearly half higher than same-tier foldable competitors. It even exceeds technically more complex tri-fold models. AppleCare+ provides a path to lower costs. The 2,599 yuan premium itself is a hidden cost.
Consumers who plan to buy the iPhone Duo should treat the AppleCare+ fee as a starting cost. The 15,999 yuan entry ticket plus 2,599 yuan insurance brings the two-year cost to 18,598 yuan. That is before tax, accessories, or any repair not covered by AppleCare+.
