Algerian Planetary Scientist Imene Kerraouch Honored With Asteroid Named After Her

An Algerian scientist has had her family name officially placed among the stars after the International Astronomical Union named an asteroid (20452) Kerraouch in recognition of her contributions to planetary science and the study of extraterrestrial materials.

The International Astronomical Union, the global authority responsible for astronomical nomenclature, announced the honor in July 2026 as part of a recognition of scientists affiliated with the Universities Space Research Association. The asteroid, previously known by its provisional designation 1999 KG₄, now officially carries the name Kerraouch. It was discovered on May 20, 1999, by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research program near Socorro, New Mexico.

For Dr. Imene Kerraouch, the recognition has an unusually personal dimension. She is a planetary scientist whose career is devoted to studying some of the oldest materials available to researchers: meteorites, primitive astromaterials and samples originating from asteroids. Her work seeks to reconstruct the formation and evolution of rocky bodies during the earliest stages of the Solar System.

Kerraouch is currently a Gordon McKay Postdoctoral Fellow at the Lunar and Planetary Institute and NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. Her research focuses on the mineralogy, petrography and isotope geochemistry of extraterrestrial materials, with particular attention to primitive chondritic material. These ancient materials can preserve chemical and mineralogical evidence from the period when the Solar System was still taking shape.

Her scientific work also includes the study of samples returned from Ryugu, the carbon-rich asteroid visited by Japan’s Hayabusa2 mission. Examining material collected directly from an asteroid gives scientists an opportunity to investigate primitive Solar System matter without relying exclusively on meteorites that have passed through Earth’s atmosphere and interacted with the terrestrial environment. Kerraouch has also worked on meteorites such as Aguas Zarcas and on comparisons between meteorite material and asteroids such as Ryugu and Bennu.

That research is part of a much larger scientific effort to answer one of planetary science’s most fundamental questions: how did the Solar System form and evolve? Primitive meteorites and asteroid samples act as geological time capsules, preserving clues about the materials and processes that existed billions of years ago. Kerraouch’s research uses these fragments to investigate the formation and evolution of early rocky bodies.

The asteroid naming therefore carries a particular symbolism. Kerraouch has spent her scientific career studying asteroids and the materials associated with them; now, an asteroid itself bears her family name.

“Having asteroid (20452) Kerraouch officially named by the International Astronomical Union is one of the greatest honors of my career,” Kerraouch said in the statement announcing the recognition. She described the connection between her name and an object of the type she studies as especially meaningful.

The distinction also has a strong Algerian dimension. Kerraouch noted that several asteroids already carry names connected to Algeria, including (1213) Algeria, (858) El Djezaïr and (859) Bouzaréah. She said she was honored to become the first Algerian scientist to have an asteroid named in recognition of her contributions to planetary science.

Her journey to Houston reflects an international scientific career built over more than a decade. According to her curriculum vitae, Kerraouch studied structural petrology and geodynamics of the lithosphere before pursuing a doctorate in planetary science at the University of Münster in Germany. Her doctoral research was carried out in collaboration with NASA’s Johnson Space Center and focused on asteroid surface properties revealed through detailed studies of meteorite breccias.

Before joining the Lunar and Planetary Institute and NASA Johnson Space Center as a Gordon McKay Fellow in 2025, she was a postdoctoral scholar at Arizona State University’s Buseck Center for Meteorite Studies. Her earlier experience also included teaching geology at the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene in Algiers and participating in research related to meteorites in southern Algeria.

The scientific record behind the recognition is substantial. Kerraouch has contributed to research examining carbonaceous chondrites, primitive astromaterials and the relationship between meteorites and samples returned by asteroid missions. Her work has been documented in NASA’s Technical Reports Server, including research involving the Aguas Zarcas meteorite and comparisons with the asteroid Ryugu and Bennu.

For younger researchers watching from Algeria and elsewhere in the Arab world, Kerraouch sees the recognition as more than a personal milestone. She said she hopes the moment will encourage young people to believe that curiosity, perseverance and a passion for science can lead to discoveries far beyond what they might initially imagine.

There is something fitting about that message. An asteroid is not merely a distant rock moving through space. For planetary scientists, it can be a record of an ancient world, preserving evidence from a time long before Earth had reached its present form. Naming one after a scientist who studies precisely those records creates a link between the researcher and the subject of her work.

For Imene Kerraouch, that link now has an official astronomical designation: (20452) Kerraouch.

Her name is no longer only attached to scientific papers, laboratories and research institutions. It is now part of the astronomical map of the Solar System.
