AI Agents Need Their Own Payment System Natural Thinks It Can Build It

The startup has raised $30 million to create payment infrastructure designed specifically for AI agents, taking on fintech giant Stripe in the process.

Artificial intelligence is quickly moving beyond answering questions and generating content. Today's AI agents can research products, compare prices, negotiate with suppliers, schedule appointments, and even coordinate complex business workflows. Yet despite these impressive capabilities, there's one critical task they still can't perform independently: making payments.

That's the problem startup Natural wants to solve.

The company has announced a $30 million Series A funding round, bringing its total funding to $40 million. Its goal is ambitious: not simply to help AI agents pay for goods and services, but to rebuild the financial infrastructure that powers digital payments from the ground up. In doing so, Natural is positioning itself against established fintech giants like Stripe while betting that the future of commerce will increasingly be driven by autonomous AI.

Why Today's Payment Systems Aren't Built for AI

Modern payment networks were designed with one assumption in mind: every transaction begins with a human.

Whether it's a credit card purchase, a bank transfer, or an Automated Clearing House (ACH) payment, nearly every financial system requires some form of human approval before money changes hands. Someone has to click "Confirm," approve a transaction, or verify their identity.

For people, this process is routine.

For AI agents, it's a major bottleneck.

Imagine an AI assistant tasked with organizing freight for a business. It can identify suppliers, compare shipping quotes, negotiate pricing, and arrange delivery schedules in minutes. But when it's time to pay the selected vendor, the entire process comes to a halt because a human must authorize the payment.

That interruption limits the true potential of autonomous AI.

Natural believes that if AI agents are expected to become trusted digital workers, they'll eventually need the ability to send, receive, and manage payments on their own.

Building Financial Rails for Machines

Natural describes itself as an agent orchestration layer, providing the financial infrastructure that allows AI agents to transact securely.

Instead of relying solely on payment systems designed decades ago, the startup wants to create new financial rails specifically for autonomous software.

Its platform would allow businesses to integrate payment capabilities directly into their AI agents, enabling them to complete entire workflows without waiting for human approval at every financial step.

That means an AI could potentially purchase supplies, pay contractors, collect customer payments, reimburse expenses, or even conduct transactions with other AI agents.

If successful, it could fundamentally change how businesses automate operations.

A Founder Returning to Finance

Interestingly, Natural's CEO, Kahlil Lalji, didn't originally intend to build another fintech company.

Lalji previously co-founded Ivella, a Y Combinator-backed financial platform designed for couples. The startup was acquired by EarnIn in 2023, where Lalji spent two years as an engineer.

After that experience, he had hoped to move away from financial technology altogether.

However, as AI agents rapidly evolved, he realized existing payment infrastructure simply wasn't keeping pace.

He saw an opportunity that became increasingly difficult to ignore.

Rather than viewing payments as just another feature, Lalji believes they could become one of the defining challenges of the AI era.

His conviction eventually led him to launch Natural alongside co-founders Eric Wang and Walt Leung in 2025.

Investors See a Bigger Opportunity

Natural's vision attracted the attention of venture capital firm Forerunner, whose founder and managing partner Kirsten Green led the company's latest funding round.

According to Green, the investment wasn't simply about enabling AI agents to check out faster.

Natural is attempting to rethink the entire payment ecosystem, including areas like dispute resolution, transaction authorization, and how financial systems should operate when machines, not humans, are making decisions.

That broader ambition distinguishes Natural from companies that merely add AI features to existing payment platforms.

Instead, it's trying to redesign the underlying infrastructure itself.

Taking on Stripe

Competing with Stripe is no small task.

Stripe has spent more than a decade becoming one of the world's leading payment platforms, processing billions of dollars in transactions every year while serving businesses ranging from startups to multinational corporations.

But even Stripe recognizes that AI agents represent a new frontier for digital payments.

The company has already begun developing tools aimed at supporting autonomous software, meaning Natural will be entering an increasingly competitive market.

Lalji believes his startup's advantage lies in speed.

Because Natural was built specifically for AI-native commerce from day one, it doesn't have to adapt legacy systems or balance older business models. Instead, it can focus entirely on creating payment infrastructure designed around autonomous software.

To strengthen that effort, the company has recruited experienced employees from fintech leaders including Stripe, Square, and Ramp.

Stablecoins or Traditional Banking?

Natural isn't alone in recognizing the opportunity.

Several startups are racing to build financial infrastructure for AI agents, with many choosing USD-backed stablecoins as the foundation for machine-to-machine payments.

Stablecoins offer several advantages, including faster settlement times, lower transaction costs, and easier automation compared to traditional banking systems.

Natural plans to support stablecoins as part of its platform.

However, unlike some competitors, the company also intends to integrate conventional banking systems, allowing AI agents to operate across both digital assets and traditional financial networks.

That flexibility could make adoption easier for businesses that aren't ready to move entirely into blockchain-based finance.

Payments at Computer Speed

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Natural's vision isn't simply making existing payments faster.

It's the possibility that autonomous AI could dramatically increase the total number of financial transactions taking place worldwide.

Today, people naturally limit how often they make purchases, process invoices, or negotiate contracts because each action requires time and attention.

AI agents don't face those same constraints.

If software begins conducting business continuously and independently, the volume of transactions could expand far beyond current levels.

Lalji believes payments could eventually occur at "computer speed" rather than human speed, creating an economy where AI systems interact with businesses, services, and even each other almost instantaneously.

That shift could multiply global payment activity several times over.

A New Chapter for Digital Commerce

Artificial intelligence is already transforming how people search for information, write software, create content, and analyze data. The next phase may involve AI agents becoming active participants in the global economy rather than simply assisting humans behind the scenes.

If that future arrives, payment infrastructure will need to evolve alongside it.

Natural is betting that traditional financial rails won't be enough to support a world where autonomous software routinely buys products, negotiates contracts, manages subscriptions, and settles invoices without constant human involvement.

Whether the startup ultimately succeeds remains uncertain, especially with established companies like Stripe pursuing similar goals. But one thing is becoming increasingly clear: as AI agents grow more capable, the ability to handle money independently may become just as important as their ability to think, reason, and make decisions.

The race to build the financial backbone of the AI economy has only just begun, and Natural is hoping to become one of the companies defining what that future looks like.
