A 19 inch rack refers to a standardized enclosure that helps in mounting multiple modules of electronic equipment. Every such module features a front panel that is 19 inches wide. The 19-inch dimension features ‘ears’ or ‘edges,’ which protrude from either side of the equipment. This helps the module to be fastened to the rack frame using screws.

Common uses of 19-inch racks are in networking hardware, telecom equipment, computer servers, scientific equipment, and gear for audio-visual production. Equipment meant to be placed in racks is usually called rack-mount/rack-mount chassis/rack-mount instrument/ or even shelf.

The height of electronic modules follows a standard of multiples of 1. 75 inches or one rack unit (RU). The rack cabinet of industry standard is 42 RU tall, though 45 RU racks are also common.

Racks vs. enclosures

Enclosures and racks both help in keeping network equipment accessible and organized. There are numerous options to choose from, causing much confusion.

But racks and enclosures differ from each other. In simple terms, a rack is simply a rack for the cable system for one’s server network- without anything to conceal it. It serves well for industrial spaces where there is no need to conceal wiring. It is also helpful for cables that must be accessed frequently because it offers a balance of accessibility and organization.

On the other hand, an enclosure features a rack inside, but as the name suggests, it is concealed and closed-off for a nifty appearance. It is ideal for home theatre equipment and office spaces that require the organization of network components which must be out of sight. Also, the enclosed space offers an additional layer of security and safety for ensuring that the system stays in great shape.

A server rack is a rack designed specifically to hold and organize IT equipment. Several operations need more than a single piece of hardware to conduct functions. By stacking servers and other IT equipment in a rack, one can maintain things in an organized fashion and enable control overflow of air.

Options

After determining whether one needs an enclosure or rack, there are several other options to wade through until one finds the best fit.

A key consideration is where to keep the rack. Should it be on the floor? On the wall? Or mounted on the ceiling? There are options to serve all these kinds of needs.

Another important concern is safety. When the wrong persons mishandle server networks that they are not familiar with, it can lead to bad consequences. From getting an unexpected electrical shock to disconnecting the wrong cable to protecting the server from damage, one may need to keep the racks off-limits sometimes. The solution is often the use of lockboxes.

Factors to consider

With regard to their most basic applications, enclosures and racks offer a structure in which to mount IT equipment like switches, servers, UPS systems, A/V equipment, routers, and many more. Also, when selected correctly, they help in the management of cables of equipment, permit the proper flow of air, and offer an added layer of security.

For this, the following factors must be considered:

  • Equipment location

The kind of rack depends on the location of the equipment. Will it be part of a server room/telecom centre/data centre/ audio-visual installation etc.

  • Weight and size of equipment

Though several electronic parts feature a standard 19-inch width, some telecom equipment may have a width of 23 inches. Also, the height and depth of components can vary greatly.

  • Kind of structure needed

No doors or sides feature in open-frame racks, while enclosures usually have side panels and doors resembling cabinets. In case of equipment needing frequent handling of cables, racks are the right choice. Enclosures are preferable for heavier equipment needing high security.

  • Special issues of security

Geographical concerns like seismic issues in earthquake-prone areas and issues of vibrations in industrial spaces must be considered.

In sum, one must have a general understanding of server racks and how to select the right one for one’s cabling system. A 19 inch rack is often used to house industrial control, power, and automation hardware, as well as professional video and audio equipment.
