6 Ways To Secure Your Home Whilst Overseas
We all look forward to a holiday, but dreams of white sandy beaches, cocktails and adventures can soon turn to a thing of nightmares if your home is not secure.
We all look forward to a holiday, but dreams of white sandy beaches, cocktails and adventures can soon turn to a thing of nightmares if your home is not secure. Knowing that there has been a break in while you are thousands of miles away can be devastating, so follow these simple tips from ISET UK to help keep your home secure whilst you are overseas.
1. Scheduled technology
Smart technology now allows us to be able to make it look like we are at home even when we are not. Special smart plugs and lights can ensure that the lights come on at a set time, and even the TV or radio can start blaring if you want them to. Properties that thieves know are vacant are an easy target, so by making it look as though someone is there it is possible to keep criminals away.
2. Video doorbells
A video doorbell can be a great way to keep everything secure while you are away. It can help you deal with genuine visitors who turn up while you are away, as you can see them on camera and can even communicate with them to tell them where to leave a parcel or ask them to come back in a week. It also gives you the ability to warn off the unsavoury types as motion sensors will tell you when there is someone on your property even if they do not ring the doorbell. This means you can inform them that you are watching and record the footage as evidence if you need it.
3. Social media
It can be tempting to countdown to your holiday on social media because you are excited or post photos of what you are up to while you are away, but this all serves to advertise the fact that your house is empty. Your posts might only be intended for friends and family, but they can still be seen by plenty of other people who might see an opportunity. You can still share your pictures and stories, but just wait until you get home to do it.
4. Lock your doors
It might seem obvious, but make sure that all doors, windows and gates have good, strong locks on them. Before you leave, check each door and window to make sure they are fully locked, even if you think it might be impossible to reach them. This not only helps to keep thieves out, but also ensures that your insurance policy is not invalidated by not having locked up properly.
5. Use your driveway
The lights might be on, but if your driveway is empty, it can still be a sign that you are not there. It can therefore be a good idea to let a neighbour know that you are going to be away and allow them to park on your drive for the duration. This can help to make their parking situation easier, and it looks like there is someone at home to the outside world.
6. Security cameras
Security cameras can help to keep your property safe at all times, and you can cover all sorts of different angles to make sure that there are no blind spots. A well positioned camera can also act as a deterrent to thieves who know that they are about to be caught in the act and it can make them think twice. It can also give you peace of mind, as you have the ability to check everything is ok and then put your feet up and relax.
Your holiday should be a reward you can enjoy, so put a few simple security measures in place and your home will be safe and secure.
