Every year my dad taught summer school. He was an English teacher at a local high school, and I don't know how he did it. I was a science teacher, and when summer rolled around, I collapsed for the first three weeks! He would arrive home about one in the afternoon, and we would be chomping at the bit for his return. We waited with swimsuits on for the daily foray to the shore. On the short trip there, my sisters and I would call out the landmarks as we drew near.

I don't know where my nature gene comes from, as absolutely no one else in my family has one. Not even my kids, who I literally dragged through bucolic scenes everywhere. We went on science vacations where we collected minerals and fossils, fished around in tidal pools and visited science museums. One day, I wanted to go to the now defunct Davis Cranberry Bog. My daughter, who had nothing to do that day, decided she would accompany me. In retrospect, it seems she came just to antagonize me. We had run the gamut in our complicated relationship. This day she was a hormonal tornado ready to blow the roof off my expedition. Even my toddler seemed to know to tread carefully around her that day. Jo could be explosive in this mood.
Monica BennettPublished 6 years ago in WanderRoad Trip Safety With Kids
If you are a little crazy like me, you constantly have the worst case scenario in your head at all times. Just yesterday I thought to myself, I need to go check on Anson, he may have climbed the stool again and turned on the water and then got interested in a knife and then stabbed himself and now he’s gushing from a belly wound on the floor in the kitchen, Oh God, why am I still sitting here, how fast can I run to the kitchen? He was sitting on his bed playing with a ball. In all reality, I think all moms have a little bit of that in them. On the road, I feel like a basket case most days because I am surrounded by people and places we are not used to and there are four kids to keep track of at all times. Obviously there are ways to combat this fear. Let me lay out some ideas for you. You may know some of these already, but wait until you read our special family trick that helps me sleep at night.

When you pile onto a ride after a long day of exhausting waits in lines that wrap around corners and down corridors, you expect to feel safe. The adrenaline is pumping and you can feel your heartbeat press against the inside of your wrist- but it's excitement. Never a fear for safety.
Shelby YarchinPublished 6 years ago in WanderMy First Time in Mexico
Mexico is one of my favorite places. The food, the people, and the overall culture captured my attention immediately....well, almost immediately. The first time I went to Mexico, I was nine years old. My family and I had gone for for Christmas and the New Years. Entering into a country where you did not know the language nor the people was a little frustrating, yet exciting at the same time. Now, my mom is from Mexico, so this was the first time I was meeting her side of the family. The only downfall was that I did not understand Spanish, so when my family members would talk to me, I would answer with “Sí” or “No” even if it was not a "yes" or "no" question. The first person I met was one of my mom's sisters, her husband, and kids. They all seemed nice, but like I said, I didn’t understand what they were saying, and they didn’t understand what I was saying.
Angelique RobersonPublished 6 years ago in WanderBest Spring Break Destinations for Families
As the father of a seven year-old, I love family travel. If you live in the Northeast or the Midwest, by the time January reaches its chilly conclusion, you’re probably already thinking about the perfect spring break destination. Most school vacations take place in early March, when there’s still about a month left of winter. If you’re lucky enough to live in the United States, there are plenty of family-friendly, budget-friendly spring break destinations on both coasts. I’ve got ten that are perfect for your family spring break, in no particular order, mostly because I’d love to do all of them!
David PorterPublished 6 years ago in WanderCruising with Kids
Our family LOVES cruising. Every year for the last six years we’ve cruised, and one of those years we even went twice! We’ve cruised Alaska, Europe, California and the Caribbean, and we have no plans of stopping anytime soon. My son who’s seven began cruising at the tender age of one, and from our very first cruise it became clear that cruises fit our family perfectly.

Kelsey LangePublished 6 years ago in WanderMust-Follow Tips for Traveling with Kids
I have plenty of tips for traveling with children. It’s actually traveling with “child,” in my case, since I only have one. I love traveling with my son, Leo, who was born in August of 2010 in Nicosia, Cyprus, the easternmost island in the Mediterranean. We’ve done a lot of traveling in Europe, including tours of the Aegean, Athens, Israel, Milan, Venice, Vienna and Lisbon, which we visited in 2012 to see Bruce Springsteen play at Rock in Rio, and in the USA where, during the summer of 2016, we visited eight states! We’ve been on boats, in cars, on planes and on trains. We’ve eaten grilled octopus on a beach outside Mykonos Town and rode a gondola under the Rialto Bridge; we’ve swam in the waves of the Jersey Shore and picked blueberries in Rhode Island. And there’s plenty more to come.
