Lying in bed I could hear the quietest of whispers, but where are they coming from?

I lay quietly in terror, tuning my ear to listen harder. There’ll be no sleeping tonight, not with the sounds I can hear stemming from under my bed.

I lay frozen, until finally the sun rises and I slowly slip from my bed. The whispers quieten, listening to my movements.

A let out a giggle of relief, realising my utter foolishness.

I lay terrified all night only to realise the noise is from the rats nest building in my foundation, not whispering at all!

This drabble has been written as part of the daily Drabble Drop challenge and today's random word, that must be included in the drabble, is 'foundation'.

Wikipedia defines a drabble as follows :

A drabble is a short work of fiction of precisely one hundred words in length. The purpose of the drabble is brevity, testing the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in a confined space.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
