How to Learn Hindi for Fun
I've been learning Hindi for over a year now, and I've made an awful lot of mistakes. I don't mean grammatical ones; I mean I've spent hours doing things that resulted in me learning no Hindi whatsoever. That doesn't sound like much of an advert for this article, but the thing is I've turned it around and I'm here to help you get straight to the good stuff.

Harris Tweed - Traditions for the Future
It's been nearly four months since my pledge to stop buying new clothes and, since unsubscribing myself from the email lists of all my former fast fashion favourites, it's hardly been a challenge. Charity shops are finally allowed to open again, the sun is tentatively shining, and I'm looking forward to being able to rummage around for summer dresses.

Win the Lottery, for Free!
There’s nothing to raise the spirits quite like winning something – well, maybe apart from the other kind of spirits, but day drinking is frowned upon. One of the little thrills of my day is checking all my free lotteries to see if I’ve boosted my finances by simple expedient of having the right birthday or postcode. Usually I haven’t, but a little bit of hope goes a long way.

The April Calendar of Celebrations, Part OneTop Story - March 2021
Spring is here, hopefully, and the world is beginning to emerge from more than a year of lockdowns, shutdowns and states-of-emergency. Our freedom and safety might still be fragile but the time is starting to feel right for a celebration...or thirty.

Namaste Wahala
I'd be the first to admit my ignorance of Nigerian cinema, otherwise known as 'Nollywood'. Ever since reading some articles about its fascinating early days in the 1990s, when films were produced on shoestring budgets and retailed on market stalls, I've planned to get around to watching some. Namaste Wahala popping up on my Netflix recommendations a few days ago seemed like a great place to start.

Magic the Mystery Lamb
I thought he was a dog when I first saw him on the kitchen floor one Friday afternoon in March. He was fuzzy, like a Portuguese Water Dog, and oddly-shaped. He was perfectly, purely black, from head to toe to tail; his eyes were shiny black in his coal-coloured face.

Why I'm Not Buying New Clothes in 2021
In 2008, I was an empty-pocketed teenager lured by the temptations of fast fashion. The country's biggest Primark had just opened in my city, and despite instantly falling into hate with the experience of shopping there - it was permanently rammed with customers - the concept of £10 outfits delighted me.

Three Super-Easy Halloween Drinks
I've always thought of Halloween as the true start of the autumn/winter party season. It's got the cutest decorations and the best outfits, for a start. It's got ancient Celtic traditions, like bobbing for apples, and cats in hats. What's not to love?

On Fearlessness and Terror
I grew up in the countryside. When I say countryside, don't imagine one of the charming settlements most English people call a village. What people call a village where I'm from, geographers would, I think, after some minutes of head-scratching bafflement, declare a hamlet; possibly.
