Of Maro, Telingo, and Suyng
Another tale I wrote years ago, oft reposted on my blog sites, of a land not far enough away... Far away, beyond the Sea of Colours whose tides glow with rainbows from the glowing jewels of its deeps, past the Reef of Shooting Stars and its silver spoors that soar into the sky and burst with sparks of blue and violet lightning. East of the great Empire of Tessarna, where the dweomercraefters of the Chega-toleh guild make their crystalline dreamholders to snare fantasies great and small. Even beyond the Shattered Horizon where the Godstrife tore the world open to the Land of Dreams where words become real, lay the shimmering minarets of the city-states of Maro, Telingo, and Suyng.

Star Knight Like Zen knights of the Round Table, these mystical warriors are part of an ancient religious order that seeks to bring peace and justice to the world. Through intense meditation and training, they improve their bodies and minds and learn to enhance their combat abilities with psychic powers, including making their own enchanted weapons.

A Dirty Dozen of Vile Vermin
Swarms of insects and rodents, giant bugs, ravenous schools of fish, and other nasty, creepy-crawly critters that spread chaos and death in the Shadowdark RPG are here for your campaign. This dirty dozen is downright filthy, wash your hands after touching them. You are welcome…

Education of a Scoundrel
It was a summer day in Santa Monica and I had three hours before my next class because one was cancelled, so I decided to take a walk around the neighbourhood. I was several blocks from the campus, reading the newest LA Weekly as I strolled past the neat little houses in the area. I was minding my own business and not really paying much attention to the world. As I passed 26th Street, there were two elderly ladies (I’ll call them Gladys and Maude for no particular reason) walking their dogs headed my direction and no one else within sight. Then a couple emerged from a small, pink house, the two of them cursing a blue streak. The man was in jeans and a greasy wife-beater, the woman had on a pink bathrobe. They looked like a typical married couple having a normal marital spat, so I didn’t take much notice.

The Rhymes and Reels of Bards
After reading the new bard class for Shadowdark I was a little disappointed by the lack of magical ability. The Magic Dabbler ability states: “You can activate any spell scroll or wand using Charisma as your spellcasting stat.” This is a good start, it’s flavourful and not overpowered, and Bards are not spell-casters per se, but it is just not enough thematically. The hypnosis ability of the Bard in Shadowdark feels vague and not especially exciting to me. The original rationale for a bard was that they lived in a proto-literate society that needed poetry for mnemonic purposes as songs and poems were used to remember lore and pass it down histories, genealogies, and myths from one generation to another, so I do not see them making much use of scrolls. Based on the myths and legends about bards, I really think bardic music needs to have some sort of magical component to it.
