SCARY MONSTERS

One from Celtic folklore, one inspired by the horror movie “They”, and the rest from my imagination, these are some new monsters for the Shadowdark RPG.

Venomous Sheep

Covered in a thick wool, this omnivorous predator from Celtic folklore appears deceptively docile and timid as it forages in meadows, and will even seem friendly to strangers. This is a gross deception as a herd of these dangerous beasts will leap upon a solitary traveller and devour the victim the moment he is surrounded. Large herds of these monsters roam the countryside, easily mistaken for normal sheep. Medium animal. AC: 13 hp: 11 ATK: 1 bite +2 (1d6) + poison Move: double near Str: +1 Dex: +3 Con: +2 Int: -2 Wis: +1 Cha: -1 AL: N Lvl: 2 Poison: DC 12 CON or paralyzed 1d4 hours

They

An alien horror from the movie “They” that appears as a mass of spider-like claws and tentacles the size of a large wolf that dwells in a plane of shadows, its true form hidden in the darkness. AC 13, HP 28, ATK 2 claw +2 (1d6), 2 tentacle +2 (1d4 + grab), MV near (climb), S +3, D +3, C +1, I +1, W +1, Ch -4, AL C, LV 6

Grab. Target is immobilised. Contested Strength check on turn to break free.

Shadow Walk. Teleport from one shadow or area of darkness to another within Far range on turn, or disappear to a planar dimension of shadows at will.

Banished By Light. Cannot move into an area that is illuminated brighter than moonlight and will be banished to the plane of shadows by any sudden bright illumination such as a light spell or sunlight.

Tracking Spore. On a successful grab, a minute spore can be injected under the skin of a victim. Thereafter, the target can be tracked wherever it goes and They can know the target’s physical condition and age at will. They use this track to children to be harvested as food in adulthood.

Flying Mask

A flying smear of sticky, black flesh with no internal organs or face that wraps around the head of its victim. AC 14, HP 4, ATK 1 suffocate and blind , MV double near (fly), S -1, D +4, C +0, I -2, W -1, Ch -4, AL N, LV 1 . Attach to the attacked target; auto-hit the next round. DC 12 STR on turn to remove.

Suffocate. The target must hold his breath until the flying mask is removed or begin to suffocate for 1d6 damage per round as the creature sucks the air out of its victim’s lungs.

Blind. The flying mask’s opaque flesh covers its victim’s face, making it impossible for the victim to see.

Burrow Beast

A massive, black scarab the size of a pony that makes tunnels by melting earth and stones with powerful acid. AC 15, HP 11, ATK 1 horn +1 (1d4 + knock), MV near (burrow), S +4, D -2, C +2, I -3, W -1, Ch -3, AL N, LV 2

Knock. DC 12 STR or be pushed a close distance and fall down.

Spit Acid. Near range, DC 15 DEX or 2d10 damage.

Dissolve. One random piece of non-magical gear the target carries is destroyed. Can dissolve a tunnel big enough for one person to walk through up to near distance in one minute through any earth or stone. Walking through the tunnel less than 1 minute after creation exposes you to acid fumes and droplets, DC 9 Dex or take 1d6 damage upon entering a newly made tunnel.

Dreamstealer

Hand-sized, black flying jellies that like to hide in bedrolls or under pillows. They scurry away and hide when a victim wakes up. If threatened they can sting with their threadlike tentacles. AC 12, HP 4, ATK 1 sting +1 (1d4 dmg) , MV close (fly or crawl), S -4, D +1, C +0, I +1, W +3, Ch -4, AL C, LV 1

Feed On Dreams. On a hit it attaches to the sleeping victim’s head and feeds on the victim’s dreams, leaving the victim groggy and cancelling the benefits of a long rest. DC 9 STR check to remove from sleeping target.

Spider, Cave Reaper

A giant spider that has adopted camouflage for hiding in caves, the cave reaper looks like a large stalactite or stalagmite, and can usually be found clinging to the ceiling of a cave. They do not build webs, but can repel down from cave ceilings on their silk threads to attack victims from above. AC 13, HP 13, ATK 1 bite +3 (1d4 + poison), MV near (climb), S +2, D +4, C +0, I -1, W +1, Ch -2, AL N, LV 3 Poison. DC 12 CON or paralyzed 1d4 hours

Lava Beast

A huge lumbering beast from deep under the earth, found near volcanoes or portals to the Plane of Fire. AC 15, HP 39, ATK 2 claw +6 (2d8)+1d8 fire damage, MV near (climb or burrow) S +6, D -1, C +3, I -2, W +1, Ch -2, AL C, LV 9 Crush. Deals an extra die of damage if it hits the same target with both claws.

Heat Aura. Creatures within near of the lava beast at start of turn DC 12 CON or 1d8 damage.

Impervious. Fire immune

In retrospect, the Burrow Beast's spit acid and dissolve abilities should be one item on their stat block.

You always find one last typo after publication. Cave reaper spiders "rappel", not repel, down their silk threads to fall onto prey.
