Walking on wheels

Rolling along that learning curve

I’m not sure Dad knows what he’s doing this time. He seems to want to strap something onto my feet. He calls them skates, and he’s convinced that I saw someone else with them and wanted to try. Doesn’t he know I’m only four? Has he forgotten all the time I spent learning to walk?

Besides, I don’t see him putting wheels on his feet. No, just flat trainers for him.

Well, we’ve put them on. Or, he’s put them on me. It’s wobbly. I can’t stand up properly. I guess I’ll just grab hold of Dad’s hand until this is over.

Ooooooohhhh! That didn’t work. The more I cling onto Dad, the more I seem to spin round and round, down and down. Then it’s a bump on the floor, and a slow process to get back on my feet. I’m really not sure about this at all.

OK, that’s a bit different. Now Dad’s got both my hands and he’s pulling me along. That’s kinda fun. Of course, if he has to go backwards it’s a bit slow but it’s pretty cool trundling along.

What is he talking about now? Something about bending knees? Pushing my feet to the side? Sounds complicated. Aaaaaannnnnnnnd bump! Again. This isn’t easy at all, Dad. I don’t think Mum would like it if she saw how often I was falling over.

But Mum’s not here, so we’ll keep going. Like this? Not quite. Oww. Like that? Better, I got a little way there before grabbing at the fence. Maybe I’m getting the hang of this.

Bump!

Not just yet. But I can see how it works. I just need to get that foot down, there. Lean forward a bit. Try to roll forward. That’s it.

It’s working.

I’m getting there. I’ve let go of Dad’s hand, I’ve let go of the fence. I’m rolling. A bit faster? Oh, oh! Wheeeeeeeee!

I’m doing it! I’m skating! It’s like I’ve got wings on my feet! Incredible. Dad’s laughing, I’m giggling like crazy.

And .... bump!

But next time, I’ll nail it.

This one is for the unofficial VViM “We’z Walking on ...” challenge. I almost forget about it until I saw Mike’s entry yesterday. At the time, I was thinking about an ice rink, but decided to change my skates from blades to wheels and imagine how my daughter might have felt about the day she tried roller skating for the first time.
