I spent my 21st birthday in England, my first trip abroad, visiting a friend who was studying at Reading University. The year was 2004. George W. Bush was President (a fact that some English blokes thought relevant to tease me about, nevermind who I’d voted for), smart phones and social media didn’t exist yet, and the most important things in my life were friends and music.

Watching Eternal Sunshine With my Ex on Valentines Day
The first time I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the 2004 film directed by Michel Gondry and written by Andy Kaufman, I was learning what jet lag feels like. I was in a movie theatre in Reading, England, having landed that morning in London and taken the train to visit a friend from Virginia who was studying abroad. I’d never flown internationally before. I was a few days shy of turning 21.

Little Blue Pills
The bottle is filled to the brim - 90 pills for 90 days. The capsules crowd together like a field of tiny blue flowers, overlapping, blending together. “So it’s finally come to this,” I think, extracting a single capsule and letting out a deep exhalation before swallowing it down. It strikes me as fitting that the oldest SSRI is a lovely shade of bright blue. Taking blue pills to kill my blues. It oughta be a country song.

Sidewalks
Today is my ninth day in Seattle. Tomorrow, the young Tech guy whose cat I’ve been looking after returns to his apartment and I make my way to the airport. I’m tired, fatigued by the burning drive to take advantage of my time here, but there’s still some walking to be done.
