"Hombres" Managing "Hambre"
Recently, I had great honor to both participate in and lead a session of a writing retreat for a group of extremely talented and creative students - writers and editors of a college newspaper. The retreat was in an art museum and for my session I had them go out into the museum, take a picture of an artifact (most of them ended up with paintings, but there were a couple of sculptures as well) and write down a short caption for the picture about the artifact or a sentence that would help them later build a story.

Putin is A Walking Dead
The cover image for this story is one of my favorite cartoons by Alesha Stupin because of its symbolism and allusions to various images, incidents and facts in Putin's life. It is based on the famous photo of topless Putin riding a horse that is often used to illustrate his masculinity and strength.

Putin Killed Navalny
Both men in the cover photo for this story, the leading Russian opposition figures, are now dead. With a span of 9 years, in the same month of February. When Nemtsov was assassinated on Feb.27, 2015, I could not believe it and was numb for a couple of days. Same thing happened when the news of Navalny's death broke on Feb.16, 2024.

Super Bowl Viewership Statistics
I gave the students in my media literacy class two different stories to read about the 2024 Super Bowl viewership statistics. One was from the Financial Times (FT), the second - from the NFL website. This was an exercise in reading the stats critically.

Russian Siberian Golden Shower
Anna was 6 the winter her mother took her to visit cousins in Siberia. It took them two days by train and a horse cart to get to the cousins’ house. It was big, with many rooms, and 7 kid cousins aged between 5 and 13. They were rowdy and wild, Anna thought.

Lynx Crossing
On a cold winter day, I'm driving along a northern rural road. In an AWD mode, I proceed cautiously as the road has not been entirely cleared after an earlier blizzard. Very few cars venture out and no one is tailing me, so I'm driving at 45 mph on a 55 road.

Adam and Eve Images, Again
I thought I finally found a reach-around for the AI-generated image that I needed. Yesterday, I put together a story about my attempts to get DALL-E to create an image of Adam and Eve as first people in Paradise, without naval buttons. The story is here:

Adam and Eve, No Naval Buttons
I've put this story together by L.C. Schafer's suggestion, who thought AI bloopers could be a fun thing (thanks, LC!). When I was writing my "Who's Eve 1.0?" story, I needed a good illustration of Adam and Eve in paradise. I didn't want to go with the images of famous classical paintings as all of them have Adam and Eve depicted with naval buttons, which as we know is a mistake since they were the first people created by God, not born of a woman, and couldn't have had the placenta.

Stupid is as stupid does
Fair warning: this is an irresponsible dark humor story I overheard on the Russian internet. One little boy named Oleg was not doing well in school. He never did his homework, couldn’t remember anything, and was horrible at math. His teacher didn’t like him and kept telling him that he was good for nothing. He was so stupid, she said, that the only thing he could hope to become was a janitor, if even that.

Fearless Girl Lost to Charging BullTop Story - February 2024
Remember how I was placed right in front of you at first? How mad you were about that, looking at me with your blood-shot eyes like you'd charge right at me if you could? You then thought and now I agree with you fully that me challenging you like that was actually changing your meaning?

DALL-E Struggles
Yesterday (February 6, 2024) I needed to create an image of a colorful pinwheel to illustrate the Circuit of Culture model for my today's class. I am paying over $20/month for the ChatGPT subscription that now includes the latest version of the DALL-E image generator. So I decided to put it to work. I will just give the screenshots of my numerous attempts to get it right and provide them with commentary and explanations as needed.
