Numbness is easy, lucidity is the real kicker

Those small decisions chose her life

Numbness filled her soul

As she left the only home she knew

Her mother her stepfather,

Two little brothers and sister too.

A strained relationship,

Brought on by illness and strife.

Her mother's bipolar disorder,

Caused endless turmoil in her life.

Her mom had given up her career,

To take care of the kids and stay home

But homeschooling and unmet expectations,

Left the girl feeling like she was all alone

Her family was split in two,

Her parents could not stand to be near.

She longed for a place to belong,

A place where she felt no fear.

So she left and went to live,

With her biological father far away.

But the promises he made to her,

Were all empty words, and her belief did sway.

Disappointed and disillusioned,

She saw him in a different light.

A liar and a manipulator,

No longer her shining knight.

She moved in with a boy,

Whom she thought she loved with all her heart.

But his words turned to abuse,

And tore her life and soul apart.

Three and a half long years,

She stayed with him through all the pain.

Until she found the strength to leave,

And start her life anew again.

Rock bottom, beaten down,

She returned to her family of old.

They were strangers now,

But their love and understanding had never grown cold

Her mother was kinder now,

Gentle and understanding too.

In the absence of a relationship,

It had changed them both, that much she knew

The girl was altered, in a fundamental way

No longer holding hate, loving fully, unapologetically, every single day

She will do great things, in spite of the pain

She will rise up, and she will break the chains
