🎼 Hot southern cornbread on a brisk, sunny day,

reminds me of the beauty of September.

Mama baked the best while listening to Como.

That, I choose to remember...

She’d sing and dance all by herself,

ever since pa left us that November.

But when we curiously asked her where he went, she said,

"Ask me in December."

~

December on my mind

December one more time

December got the blues

Decembers’ not for you.

~

She once said we can be anything we want

just be nice to all people.

The reverend repeated the same lesson

underneath the churches’ steeple.

One, good thing is for certain,

us siblings had a good ole time,

fishing down by Keith Jackson's Pond,

or stealing sips of mama's cold wine...

Every pair of ears in town knew

our dad was an ex-offender.

Like saving for a rainy day,

we all waited till December.

But the bastard… he never came back.

~

December on my mind

December one more time

December never came true

December got the blues…🎼

Well-wrought! I feel like December--as winter encroaches--is an indwelling time, a time for quiet reflection, and though not everything we meet there in our memory is good, it makes us better to come to terms with it. You really hit me with that here. Also just excellent poetic form!

Daddies so good, daddies so bad. Some both good and bad. Still, the fun was had and the cornbread ate, wine drunk and fishing. Nostalgia in December. Brings back memories.

  • Gosh this was so poignant. Loved your take on the challenge!

This should be a Blues standard, Lamar! Absolutely wonderful! And, damn, your line 'hot southern cornbread on a brisk, sunny day,' made me hungry and the photo of the skillet cornbread made me salivate.

Dare I hope you actually have audio for this?

  • Lamar, you captured the poor family of the 50s South, with a mom doing her best for her boys, despite a rascally husband, perfectly.
