Have you ever been to a Hollywood party? Maybe there’s a better suited question. Have you ever watched an episode of The Hills? Imagine walking into the room of a Teen Vogue summer party feeling like you have UGLY COW written across your forehead, and everyone reads it as they pass you. That was me. That was how I felt. All. The. Time.

I guess it’s sort of a cliché to say, “confidence is key,” but as well as it is a cliché, it’s also very true. Someone told me that other day that people shouldn’t watch or go on social media, so that they do not feel less than another individual or simply insecure. I disagree with this concept. Now, I believe that people with insecurities should take steps to becoming more secure and confident with themselves and if turning off social media helps you, then by all means do that, but I want us to look at the thing we fear will create an insecurity and face that head on. Rebuttal the negativity with positivity. I believe confident comes with knowing yourself enough to see “bad” comments about yourself. To know others are not so fond of you and be okay with that because you love you.

Throughout life I, as have many others I'm sure, have gone through things I thought I wouldn't make it out of; felt pain, I thought would never end, and had new feelings I've never experienced and didn't know how to deal with. Getting through these difficult times and new experiences have made me who I am now and are what has taught me all the important lessons that will help me get through whatever challenge comes next. There’s a quote, from ‘Looking For Alaska’ by John Green that says, “We can’t know better until knowing better is useless”. I think this is the basic premise of learning from your mistakes, that until you've lived through it and overcome the challenge you don't know that you wish you knew what you know now sooner, but at least you'll know for the next time so you don't have to make the same mistakes twice. I strongly believe that you have to make your own mistakes and go through your own challenges to truly learn the most important lessons in life.
