Safety at home cannot be overemphasized, especially when you have little ones.

Whether it’s ensuring you double lock your doors, or installing gadgets where necessary, it is important that you do all you can to make your home as safe as possible.

While you’ll need to do extensive research for whatever safety gadget you plan to get, here’s a list of essential stuff that can get you started.

1. Smoke Detectors

Put in smoke detectors to alert you and your family to flames as soon as possible. Install them on every level of your house and outdoors, check them occasionally to ensure they are functioning correctly, and replace the batteries at the 6-month mark.

2. Fire Extinguishers

If you want to safeguard your property from fire, fire extinguishers are a crucial component. Keep in mind that you should only use them on minor fires and that you require training to utilize a fire extinguisher effectively. Keep one in each room, as well as the kitchen and garage.

3. First Aid Kit

Every household should have a first aid kit, which may be purchased or assembled by the members of the family. Small cuts and scrapes are easy to treat, and an antihistamine tablet might come in handy if you suffer from allergies, both of which are covered by a well-stocked first-aid kit. Store it in a safe, dry, and out-of-the-way location, away from any kids.

Bandages, rubbing alcohol, cotton balls, a thermometer, antiseptic, drugs, and other necessities are commonplace in first aid kits. Once a year, make sure all of the medicine is still within its expiration date and take stock of what else may need replenishing or replacing. For your own protection in the event of an accident or other mishap on the road, you may wish to invest in one for your vehicle as well.

4. Burglar Alarm

There is a multitude of reasons to buy an alarm — of course first and foremost would be to discourage robbers. It also helps you sleep easier at night knowing the home is protected. For others, it may be for insurance reasons – but all of them imply that you may rest more soundly knowing that you have at least some protection against the worst-case situation.

Get an alarm that you can zone so that you may set the alarm downstairs at night, and the entire home when you go out during the day. This will offer you the utmost peace of mind.

5. Carbon Monoxide Detector

For the same reason you need a smoke alarm, a carbon monoxide detector is critical for keeping your home free of poisonous gases. You should keep one next to any gas fireplace, stove, or heater. A detector is necessary since this is a lethal gas that cannot be detected by sight or smell.

6. The Grandfather List of All Necessary Emergency Contacts

In order to ensure everyone's safety, it's important to have a single, readily accessible list of important phone numbers, emails, and addresses for everyone in the household. Besides the names and phone numbers of people who should be contacted in case of an emergency, you should also include your own contact information and health insurance details.

7. Disaster Bag

The disaster bag, often dubbed a "Go Bag," is designed to be useful in the event of an emergency, such as a tornado, hurricane, or other natural catastrophes. These kits may be rather comprehensive, and they can be stored in plastic containers in a basement or attic. Food, water, a torch, an additional mobile phone battery, candles, papers, personal hygiene items, pet food, etc. are all examples of everyday needs.

How much you keep and where you keep it are also factors to consider. Remember that in the event of a blackout or other disaster, it is helpful to have candles and flashlights on hand. And because batteries have so many applications, it's smart to always have a stockpile on hand.

8. Home Security System

As a result of its effectiveness in deterring burglaries and intruders even when the homeowners aren't around, home security systems have become more common. Security cameras, motion detectors, and night lighting are all included. Keep in mind that a house with a functioning security system is far less likely to be broken into.

Installing a security system is essential if you value the protection of your family and possessions at home. If you regularly go out of town, this will let you keep an eye on the house and report any suspicious activity to the police. If you're worried about the safety of your house, installing a sturdy door lock is a must.

That's it! I hope this helps in your search for necessary safety equipment for your home. And if you happen to know of any not on this list, kindly share. You could save a life :)

It never even crossed my mind to have a list of necessary emergency contacts, especially if I, or first responders can't get into my phone.
