'Guardians Of The Galaxy 3' Star Teases More Improvised Scenes

'Promises, Promises.'

In a recent interview with The Wrap, Karen Gillan talks about the freedom given to her on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy 3. No doubt there has always been a level of play within the scenes, but the actress stresses that she has leveled up her improvisation powers:

“There’s been way more improv for me this time around than I have ever given before.”

While out promoting Judd Apatow’s latest comedy, the new Netflix show The Bubble, it is inevitable that the MCU and her character Nebula are bound to come up. Gillan admits that while Guardians 3 might have been the most improv she has done, it is certainly not the first for her playing Nebula:

“I will say, I’ve improvised a fair bit of Nebula because I don’t know if you saw ‘Endgame,’ which seems like —  (laughs) — That’s a ridiculous question. But basically, all of the stuff with Robert Downey Jr. at the beginning was like, that whole montage was improvised. Because all that was written was oh, they play football. They eat, they do this. And then we kind of ended up getting to improvise because he’s an amazing improviser. And so there was all this stuff about them playing the game and how much it meant to Nebula that she actually got to win something. And so she’s been slowly getting more improv-y."

While Gillan may be putting in the effort in the land of Hollywood, not even the actors themselves know what would eventually end up on the screen.

“This time around in ‘Guardians 3,’ she’s, yeah, she’s improvising a lot more lines. I don’t know if they’ll make the cut but I hope they do.”

Gillan’s work with Apatow on The Bubble has given her more confidence in improvisation. It appears to be a new tool she has unlocked, ready for her to use going forward in her career.

“For me, the biggest challenge was like — because I’ve never really done that before — was kind of like switching off the thing in your brain that judges yourself before you say something. I think like, that was the main skill I walked away from the movie with, which is that I was able to turn that off, and now I’m improvising in all sorts of movies that I never would have before. So it’s kind of fun.”

When last we saw Nebula and the Guardians, they were watching an awkward passive-aggressive power struggle over who is actually in charge now that Thor has joined their intergalactic crew. Will anyone ever respect Peter Quill as their leader? No, and that is part of the charm of their crew. They all see themselves as the leader of the crew.

We know that James Gunn is back running the ship in Guardians 3. In addition to the original cast’s return as the core five, Mantis, and Nebula will be Adam Warlock (Will Poulter). Adam Warlock’s birth pod was teased in Guardians 2, and the character is said to be a favorite of Gunn’s.

The actors have also teased an emotional journey this time around with Gillan saying she cried when she read the script. Will we finally find out Rocket’s origins? How will Thor: Love and Thunder alter the course of these characters? Will we see the death of one or more major characters? All of our questions will have to wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently in production and is scheduled for release on May 5, 2023.
