Earth Wyrm
Without looking Molog could smell and sense a presence. He knew his vision and hearing weren’t what they once had been but accepted it as a worthy compromise for still being alive. I’m closer to a fossil than anything living, he thought miserably. A sour mood had been his only companion on a sluggish journey afoot, lamenting over an arduous withdrawal from hibernation while painfully aware it could be the last.

“The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. According to legend, it’s said to light itself on the anniversary of the murders,” I said as I over dramatized a tale about our cabin. The eager listeners stifled their laughter, adding to the ironic attempt.

Raid
It was the year of our lord, 980 AD. Aethelred was king and I was not yet a man. ... As soon as I opened my eyes I knew it was far past dawn. I’d be in for a beating from Brother Aldwin if he knew I’d missed morning prayers again. My ambition of becoming a priest had waned since being aware of joining the fyrd and the potential of the king’s army in a few years. In truth, I dreamed of learning to wield a seax rather than being taught my letters to be a scribe for the church.

Observing the open ground through the dense ferns, the track still looked clear, instinct was keeping me from moving as well as the stiffness in my legs. I’d been here for what felt like an age but being discovered so close to Whitehaven would cost me my life.
