Smartystan: Legion of Supporters
Hector Vergara continued his daily regimen. It was leg day. He prepared for the arduous task of squatting, pressing, and of course, before and after, stretching. Warm ups and cool downs found their way on his gym schedule. Once he finished, he gulped down an iced carrot and celery smoothie. His fitness routine permitted him the ability to stay fit and sharp despite his time constraints. It was why he got up so early in the morning in the first place. Upon showering and shaving, he donned sensible dress shoes, khakis, and a zip up sweater. He wore glasses. When his driver pulled up to his minimansion, it seemed as if Vergara had a burst of energy ready to spring forth and jump start the day. In his mind, he considered himself. As a reasonably wealthy man and head of the Average Capacity Association, he felt the singular itch that could never be scratched. His abilities afforded him the things that no one else could perform. No one in the ACA had a clue as to his acumen. All they knew was that he presented himself as a mouthpiece. He said all the speeches and integrated everything into the Association.

“I just earned it. I have my license to my truck and want to start my business,” Fenton Sheltham said. His words flew from his mouth like gifts of diamonds. “I just want to be in a place where others excel. I know I’m just a truck driver and I want to have my own enterprise, but it’s more than that. My two boys and a girl want their daddy to be able to provide for them.” He rubbed his hands together and looked at the backs of them. The dark flesh contrasted with his palms. His gray eyes shot around the room. He felt like a champion just waiting on the judges to score his fight. In all of the ways he could have settled or given up, he rolled past all of that and excelled.

Light shone off the car’s mirror. A police officer approached. A highway trooper, she slid her campaign cover on her head. The navigational system followed the driver’s command to pull over to the side of the road. She slid up to the passenger side of the vehicle.

Rain didn’t stop Mala. Swaddling for Edgar covered the baby boy’s body and she held her other son’s, Burton, six-year-old hand. The mud, muck, and mire didn’t hinder her from staying on course with her mission. From Pennsylvania, they all trekked to get closer and closer to land that was never promised but simply implied. Each step produced more mud caked around her sneakers. She didn’t care. Her rucksack provided them protein packs to put into plastic bottles and nuts and berries and dried meats to keep their muscles in good health. Water hydrated. She rested. The baby had been asleep the entire time that she had started her journey and her eldest son remained silent throughout the excursion as well.

Metal chopsticks sat on the corner of the bento box. Vestin Go had polished off the contents just a few moments ago. A glow came from the window of his high rise luxury apartment. He played video games to keep his mind active and focused. Then the phone rang.

Sounds emitted from the stereo system. They were like little metallic pings. The way that they combined to make a symphony of technology warmed Belinda Gummer. She had been working on this project for the past two years. Success evaded her. Multiple crashes and malfunctions colored her reality. Belinda wanted to see a learned machine change the structure of DNA to help physicians better understand the nature of diseases. Her eyes darted towards the data. All of it came streaming down the screen like electronic rain.

Words whispered from tongue to tongue. Belinda created an algorithm that could zero in on how people spoke. The two doctors joined in by Strong contributing knowledge of game theory and Frampton making it possible for a pattern to make pharmaceuticals to take hold. All that combined to make Go the lead on this one. He took the data from the other three and made it a cohesive whole.

Delaseer started as a corporation. It transformed into a 501 (c) (3). That process became evident in the capacity where the four founders transitioned from being millionaires and billionaires to being philanthropists in the most sincere and passionate of ways. Dr. Kaija Frampton had delivered the biggest hunk of her fortune to endow the project.

When the horn blew, the crowd chanted. “GO, CRAZIES, GO!” No celebrations or “cellys” meant that the players on the ice just kept the game going. Like toys on a giant table, they ambled and chased, shot and dove, and performed to the best of their ability: average. Dr. Strong brought his girlfriend Lerrica. Her alabaster skin and gray eyes and angular face spoke of attractiveness. But what really grabbed the doctor about her was her master’s degree in Nineteenth Century Russian and American Literature. She smiled at him. The game was really a sad affair. Everyone except for a few players showcased average skills. They displayed even more vicious acts.

The Grown Kid magazine featured some of the most lurid, despicable, low-grade, and financially rewarding stories of the day. Dr. Strong and Dr. Frampton both knew the reason for their “exposé” of the goings on at Smartystan. The staff editor, Jogan Felton, looked older than his forty-two years. He wore a tweed jacket and showed off a nasty beard that featured flecks of gray in it.
