Purple, my favorite color, painted on the roof of a birdhouse
gifted from neighbor
placed on a pole behind a Japanese Maple
at the front of the house,
the tree now red-leafed and bushy in spring
***
Pruning lower branches,
we see
hornets buzzing around the juicy red leaves,
danger
Evil invaders, they can
kill nesting birds and hatchlings
Confirmed! Half-built bird nest filled with hornet eggs
Invaders and danger removed
House will be cleaned and returned
for any feathered friends feeling
fertile for purple

Author Note: A neighbor gave me a small wooden unpainted birdhouse with a purple roof, knowing purple is my favorite color. I didn't have a photo, so I used AI to create one. Our tree is much prettier and has feathery leaves. We have birdhouses that birds use made using bird specifications for the hole size and the babies. This was more decorative, so we put it on a pole next to the house in the front. As my husband was pruning the bushy Japanese Maple, removing lower branches that were covering a hosta plant, I saw the hornets flying in and out of the birdhouse. We care for bees and have many bumblebees in our yard. Huge, fat, and all colors. These insects were either Hornets or Yellow Jackets, and even though they are pollinators, they can't be allowed to nest near a residence. My husband took down the house, opened it, and found a nest of hornets inside a half-built bird nest. We usually rub soap on the inside of the birdhouse holes, which is supposed to keep hornets out.

Yikes! Wrong inhabitants of such a variety moving in is quite a problem! Glad you evicted them!
Ac - Hadta chop down two Gorgeous Georgia Peach varity trees - Hornets were attacking my Corgis; nothing the pest sprayers could control as they fed on overripe and fallen sweet nectar. My neighbors were disappointed too; they lost their constant supply of fresh Peach-Cobler ingrediants - always tasted better just off of the tree - I reckon the Hornets knew that, too. Gorgeous, and I love the Japanese maple!
Oh wow, I didn't know soap can be used for that. I learned something new today. Loved your poem!
Not a fan of hornets. I’ve never been stung by a bee, but I’ve lost track of the many times I’ve been stung by hornets.
One of my fave colours too Andrea. Especially like the Lilac shade. A fitting ode to it.
Awful pests!! Japanese Maples are soo beautiful! Incredibly done! 💌
Hornets are nasty mean insects, I'm glad you were able to get rid of them.
