Shooting Guernica
The summer of my photography internship, studying at the Escuela Universitaria de Artes in Madrid, was a blur of soaring architecture, echoing galleries, dimly lit clubs, darkrooms, and dark-eyed Spanish artists. I was serious about learning my craft--especially with my parents' educational funds running out--but I also wanted to have fun.

"Out or in, Gabe," I called from my post at the kitchen sink, finishing up the lunch dishes. I smiled faintly at the echo of my mother’s voice from my own childhood, chiding me with a similar admonition. My mother had somehow always known where I was from any point in the house. I still had eyes only in their customary place in the front of my head, so I was thankful the kitchen layout gave me a line of sight to the living room.

The logic of wonder
Everyone—including me—ooh’ed and ahh’ed when the moon held back the tides of light, like the walls of the Red Sea straining against the outstretched staff of Moses. And we gushed to see sunlight break loose, cascading through that widening crack. The moment felt mantled with significance, overshadowed by mystery.
