Walter Kist & the Seven Whorls Chapter 2
After four weeks of training I was given three students: Mr. Spade, a young man who wore purple John Lennon specs; Mr. Gow who wore a black eye patch; and Mr. Scammel, a retired accountant who wore school-principal glasses, through which the pain of his recent divorce could easily be seen.

Walter Kist & the Seven Whorls Chapter 6
Toronto. Aug. 4, 1981. Dear Kist, The service was last week and there was a wake at the Selby Hotel, a rundown Victorian manse where Hemingway once lived and my dad once drank with his sock cronies. The latter were all in attendance, all kind of rundown themselves, except for their socks, which you would like: preppy argyle and natty striped, all very savvy. I’ll try to get you some - you can mix and match.

Walter Kist & the Seven Whorls Chapter 5
At precisely 7:05 on a sunny July morning, a dull boom sounded in the heart of downtown Vancouver, and a bird came fluttering out of a glassless window in the Devonshire Hotel. A hundred kilos of dynamite detonated in the elevator shaft and the mighty Dev collapsed in on itself like a clumsy giant whose legs had finally buckled beneath the weight of its history: love, death, cocktails.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Holly Golightly should've been more screwed up and Paul should've been gay, just as Capote wrote those characters. Still, there are gems in this flick: Moon River, earrings that sparkle for miles, Givenchy gowns, Cat. And then, Mickey Rooney spoils it all with his monumentally ill-conceived portrayal of Mr. Yunioshi.

“Giant” is a Jelly Donut
You have to chew through a lot of doughy footage in this movie before you get to the heart of it. And that heart is Jimmy Dean. Mumbling and awkward, Dean creates a character that goes deeper than the oil drill he labours over, making "Giant" digestible and ultimately delicious.

Gooseberry Fields
Synopsis: An opening montage reveals that in the late 60s, a young man named Rio inherited an apartment complex. He then offered all his friends a years’ free rent, each in their own flat, with the provision that they create a co-operative community based on love and peace. Taking a page out of the Beatles songbook, Rio put a few berries forward for the name of his apartment buildings: blue and rasp split the vote, leaving goose for the win.

Santa Catalina
In 1919, chewing gum giant William Wrigley, Jr. bought Catalina Island and had a mansion built atop one of its highest hills, providing a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean. This was the Californian island I travelled to for the Catalina Film Festival. The Wrigley Mansion still stands with its magnificent view but is now a bed and breakfast.

The Silver Band
Hemangiosarcoma. I couldn't even figure out what the vet was saying as she told me my dog's diagnosis. I only knew it wasn't good. It's cancer of the spleen and it affects the blood vessels. And nothing can be done about it. They can take the spleen out but within 2 or 3 months the cancer will be back.
