The Light They Steal From You

I hate that you’re happy

Your happiness bites me like a tooth to the cheek

It’s not that I’m jealous, although I am a little

But your happiness is a lie that you sell yourself

To protect you from the choices you make

I was your best mistake, and it scared you

But you ran back into the fire. Seeking the comfort of its burn

Now I suffer in the smoke of your flames

I know you pushed me away to save me

But you did not burn me. Our embers matched

I saw your light.

If anything, you saved me.

We could have survived together.

..

I hope that you are free from the slow burn of lies that have followed you

You’ve suffered so much already

I hate that you chose him and not me

I emerged from the fire. I did not create it

Perhaps that is why I felt different

You told me you were afraid to get hurt

But continue to trust your heart with those unworthy

I hope this time it is different because I’d hate to watch you burn

Promise me you’ll jump if you need to

Please don’t give them the satisfaction. Some people love to watch your beauty burn.

They wish to control the warmth you give to the world

Small men will steal from you. Eager to wield your power

But they could never carry your torch

I’d hold you to the sky. Honoured to be the hand that supports you

I hate to watch them dim your light

And pray that you find your path, knowing that it’s not mine to take

And there lies my ache

..

This poem captures the ache of unrequited love and the longing for someone's happiness, even if it's not with you. It's beautifully written and deeply relatable.💕

  • U nailed toxic relationships with certain clarity

Congratulations on Top Story! 🥳 Loved all of it but this line dropped my jaw: "Now I suffer in the smoke of your flames"

This poem uses an extended metaphor of fire to symbolize both passion and destruction. It illustrates the complexity of human relationships, where love can sometimes verge on obsession and the desire to protect the other can turn into control. It also highlights the difficulty of watching those we love suffer and letting go when they make decisions we consider harmful. This is a poignant reflection on the limits of the influence and support we can offer to those who are dear to us. Thank you for sharing.
