Vocal & my relationship to publishing traditionally
Ever since my small writing beginnings, when I started writing on Vocal in February 2021, I had been in a truly terrible slump & funk when it came to my writing. I had so many unfinished projects, ideas, half finished manuscripts and first chapters that were going nowhere.
Melissa IngoldsbyPublished 4 days ago in MotivationWhy Just Write Is The Best Advice You Don’t Listen To
Before the last 6 months, I hadn’t written anything that wasn’t for my job or university for a number of years. I wanted to write more, I used to write all the time just for fun. I used to write poems and short stories that were just for me. I used to show them to certain members of my family but it was the process of writing them that I really enjoyed.
Michael NaylorPublished 10 days ago in MotivationTo Give Your Last Twenty
He walks oddly, shuffling and nearly tripping down the hallway toward his apartment door. I slow my pace, allowing my neighbor— a stuffy ex-marine with one missing tooth, a strong odor of liquor and two weeks' worth of unwashed stench always accompanying him—to reach his door. I crinkle my nose, nearly gagging as he dawdles ahead.
AshleyPublished 17 days ago in MotivationIt Only Took One Minute.......
It only took a minute. I was sitting at the computer in my office when the phone rang. I picked up the receiver and then laid it down my desk as I went to find the student who the call was for. Within seconds I was back at my desk, ready to resume typing, when I heard the student yelling obscenities at me for listening in to his call through the handset that was still lying on the desk. Sick and tired of the lies he was spewing, I was up running down the hall, ready to kill him. By the time I reached him, I had calmed enough not to hurt him, but as I turned back towards my room, I knew that I couldn’t go on like this any longer. The decision was clear. I had to leave.

Inspiration is all around us. Sometimes it comes in an email labeled 'TYWK' or 'For You'. Sometimes it's a meme posted on social media. Other times it's more subtle.
Judey KalchikPublished 2 months ago in MotivationSimply Me.
I'll start this off by saying that if I had to choose a word for this next year on Vocal, it would be Discovery. Vocal has been my breakthrough for my writing. What I mean by that, is I have enjoyed writing since I can remember. As a child, and into my teens I loved writing poems and song lyrics, and eventually started writing fictional love stories. But then I became an adult, and that life hit me like a freight train. Writing fell on the back burner for many years, even though I still had a desire deep down to continue it. I always let life get in the way though. And then, in my early 30's I ran across the Vocal platform. A spark lit back up in me, just a small one though. Because unfortunately at the time I was stuck in an unhealthy addiction which consumed my time and energy. So I signed up for the yearly subscription, and started to write. And boy did I write, for several months in fact. But sadly a year down the road I looked at my progress, and all I had to show for it were a bunch of unfinished drafts. I was going through so much I didn't really have the ability or attention span to commit myself to what I so badly wanted to do. With that being said, and before I can talk about my goals and aspirations for this new year on Vocal, I need to give you a bit more insight into my past.
Tressa RosePublished 4 months ago in MotivationThe Tithe
The Tithe The church has asked for your ten percent. There are the year end accounts to reconcile and requests on what to give in upcoming events, chances to volunteer to help the cause. The pessimist in me recounts the times in which I said I would give, even if only to myself, and came up short or lacking, missing a deadline or wanting another edit to the timeline so I could make room for the unrequited time. My ledger of lost opportunity looms above me like a ghost visiting my bedroom on Christmas Eve.

In the heart of the bustling city, amidst the noise and chaos, I found myself at a crossroads. Life, as I knew it, had become a relentless race towards an undefined finish line. HieuPublished about 5 hours ago in MotivationIncreasing Black Female Representation on Industry Red Carpets
Hi everyone, Thank you for tuning into my article. I have had the honor of gracing numerous industry red carpets, interviewing some of the most legendary Oscar, Grammy, Tony, and Emmy winners. I've spoken with some of the most beloved actors, singers, directors, and writers, and covered press events for major networks. However, during these events, I rarely see women who look like me in the room or even on Zoom. I am immensely thankful for the opportunity to be a journalist. With a degree in media, my journey began in elementary school, reporting on school news. I then joined a theater and TV production company where we produced live TV weekly from our public access cable station. After obtaining my media degree, I went on to write and produce short films on pressing social issues such as bullying, suicide prevention, domestic violence, and HIV awareness. My hard work has been recognized, and I am an award-winning writer and journalist. Throughout my career, I have put in the work, sacrificed, and accomplished a lot while being a mother. Yet, I am acutely aware that many people who look like me are not afforded these same opportunities. This lack of representation is a significant issue that needs to be addressed. I want to call for more Black women to have the chance to obtain the opportunities I am blessed to have.

Nishat AnthonyPublished about 9 hours ago in MotivationThe problem with trying to set up boundaries
Lately, I have hit my breaking point. I realize how much that I take from everyone in my life. Living with my family has really forced me to look at my life, at everything that I have to deal with. I think that it is because of everything I am putting up with that forced me to see what I put up with. Always being the 'good child' growing up, it has been put into me that I need to accept it. Don't say anything to ruffle feathers, and take whatever treatment that people give me. It was put into me that I should never say anything negative or against someone. So that I don't upset anyone, so that everyone thinks that everything is fine. I also have been through so much that as long as don't say anything, then I can't be hurt, I can't be put down, I can't be made fun of. So I now see that I have been putting up with whatever people do to me for a long time. Always accepting it.
