There is a new group of vehicles that is making waves in the industry, electric cars. If you are drawn to sports cars, the rising fad of electric vehicles (EVs) is quite trending nowadays. The official Twitter account of Tesla, one of the leading brands of this automobile type is gaining more followers than any other car maker today. What are electric cars and why are they popular today?

What are electric cars?

Electric cars are vehicles that run partially on electricity. They are different from conventional vehicles that utilize engines powered by gasoline or diesel. Electric vehicles can be categorized as electric trucks or cars. Particularly, they utilize electric motors on electricity coming from fuel cells or batteries.

The selling point of electric cars is sustainable driving. They do not cause harm to the environment, and instead, help the planet in many ways compared with conventional vehicles. They are cleaner than other vehicles in terms of emissions, what they bring to the air and their contribution to the worldwide greenhouse gas. The vehicle type and the electricity source will tell how clean it runs. The emissions of greenhouse gas from EVs are compared with cars that get more than 100 miles per gallon. EVs are not totally emission-free but they are on its way to becoming one when charged with renewable energy sources like wind or solar energies.

What makes electric cars different?

There are several companies that produce electric cars today. They include Tesla, Audi, Chevrolet, Mini, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and more. EVs utilize an electric motor more than what conventional cars use, which is the internal combustion engine. The car also utilizes a sizable traction battery park to power up the motor, which, to keep going, must be charged in a charging station or wall outlet.

Since it runs on electricity, the vehicle does not emit exhaust coming from the tailpipe, and likewise does not contain the usual components of liquid fuel. This includes the fuel pump, fuel line, and fuel tank.

EVs comprise of the following:

  • Battery
  • Charge port
  • DC/DC converter
  • Electric traction motor
  • Onboard charger
  • Power electronics controller
  • Thermal system
  • Traction battery pack
  • Electric transmission

Many of these are likewise present in cars that aren’t EVs, however they are different. Let’s get to know each of these car parts.

Electric cars have the auxiliary battery that provides it with electricity which, in turn, powers up the accessories of the vehicle. There is a charge port that lets the car connect to external power supplies to charge the traction battery pack.

On the other hand, the DC/DC converter is the device that converts the higher-voltage DC power right from the traction battery pack going to the lower-voltage DC power necessary to run the accessories of the car, as well as recharge the auxiliary battery. With the electric traction motor that uses power from the traction battery pack, the wheels of the car are running.

Your onboard charger sources the incoming AC electricity supplied through the charge port to convert this to DC power and charge the traction battery. It monitors the qualities of the battery, including the temperature, voltage, current, and charge state while the pack gets charged. The EV won’t be complete without the power electronics controller or the unit that takes responsibility for the electrical energy flow that comes from the traction battery. In turn, it controls the electric traction motor speed and the torque that it comes up with.

Each electric car also has the thermal system that keeps the temperature range of the engine, power electronics, electric motor, and other parts consistent. You have heard about the traction battery pack that keeps electricity for use by the electric traction motor. Lastly, the transmission transfers mechanical energy from the electric traction motors so the wheels can run.

Does it look similar to the usual cars you have today? Among others, these are what make electric cars different.

The popularity of electric cars

Why are electric cars popular? They are quite the trend in the market today due to continuous performance and range improvements, government subsidies, technological advancements, and lower costs. The advantages you can get from driving electric cars are also what contribute to their popularity. What are these advantages?

EVs and technology are closer together than how conventional cars are. When the electric car needs charging, you can simply connect it to your mobile device to charge. Or, you can plug the car to an electric outlet just like how you charge your smartphone, tablets, and PCs at home.

One of the things that make EVs the perfect option to reduce your carbon footprint is offering people with various fuel choices. These cars are known to reduce emissions that pave the way to climate change and add to the fog. Thus, it helps the planet.

The government plays a crucial role in promoting the use of electric vehicles, through funding it. Not just this, but technological advancements with these cars are continuous, providing it with advanced touch-screen features, self-driving capabilities, and more, like how things happen with smartphones. Plus, electric cars are also cheaper compared with the usual units.

Having said this, and reading this information, there are various companies that partner with the makers of EVs to offer the cars to the market. They offer the electric cars as subscription vehicles to give their consumers a try of a variety of cars instead of just one.

Car subscription companies offer the Tesla car subscription with added features like insurance, roadside assistance, and maintenance of a wide range of car parts. You can invest in the Tesla subscription car enthusiasts have reviewed to be great and highly recommended.

For several years, before the inception of these vehicles, the world was facing a distant fantasy as it strived to achieve sustainable driving that takes care of the environment. Now, it has changed. The future is bright for EVs. These cars are here to stay. While there are detractors, mostly coming from the market that will still prefer the conventional car, or perhaps the luxury cars, their massive crowd of followers are among what will most likely propel this industry to success.
