How to Measure Speaker Size? Changing your car speakers usually is quite an easy job. Speakers and several retailers have broad databases showing the size of speakers fit into particular vehicle locations. However, in some cases, no information is available. Maybe the car is too old or an odd or dark model. If that is the case, the current speakers must be measured to see what works in your vehicle.

So what's the deal with car speaker sizes anyway?

At Crutchfield, we support clients who still have concerns about the size of the car speaker. The size of car speakers can be very confusing. It helps to think of car speakers' size in the mobile audio environment as a category rather than a particular size. As much as a 2x4 is not 2" thick or 4" wide, a 6-1/2" speaker does not necessarily have a diameter of 6-1/2. Its measurement is similar, but the actual measurements of the 6-1/2" speakers will differ depending on the design of the manufacturer.

The differences between speaker sizes

When looking at the speakers we sell, multiple dimensions and details about the manufacturer are considered when deciding whether they match in different cars. The classification of the size is closest to the diagonal measurement and hole orientation of the frame. It's not just about the cone diameter or the speaker's cutout diameter, which is a common misconception.

Figuring out the size of your vehicle's factory speaker

It may not be easy to estimate the size of the factory speaker in your car. The speakers don't always follow the same size specifications as the aftermarket speakers because they are designed to work on the vehicle's overall architecture. And you usually have to struggle to get to the factory speakers, of course, and whether a speaker is under a panel or a grille, it is difficult to tell how big a speaker would be.

Step By Step Guide About How to Measure Speaker Size

Step 1: Delete the present speaker. Given the broad range of vehicle types, this phase is beyond the reach of this report.

Step 2: Measure the speaker's mounting depth. This is the distance from below the mounting flange of the speaker to the base of the magnet. This means that your new speaker isn't too deep with bumps under it.

Step 3: Measure the speaker's mounting height. This is the distance from the bottom of the mounting flange of the speaker to the highest point. This means that your new speaker is not too big and brushes against a grill or door frame.

Step 4: Measure the speaker's cutout width. This is the size of the opening needed for the speaker, which is determined from where the basket falls below the speaker flange.

Step 5: Measure the width of the mounting screw. This is the distance between the screw hole on the speaker's flange and the speaker. This might not be as important as other measurements, as a new speaker will also be fed into new holes.

Check your requirements against those speakers you wish to purchase to ensure that you buy a speaker that suits your vehicle.
