There’s no denying that your car horn is extremely important in not only keeping you safe but also others on the road. But, there will be moments when your car horn might suffer from problems such as the inability to sound at all or sound at a lowered tone. Times like these are when you should look into replacing your car’s old horn and instead get a new one.

You can either hire a professional to help you with the horn replacement or get it replaced all by yourself. In case you’re planning to go the DIY route, then don’t fret as we’re going to help you achieve the same without any problems. In this comprehensive guide, we’re going to share some of the best ways through which you can effortlessly replace your vehicle horn without worries.

When Fixing A Quiet Car Horn

According to a popular mobile mechanic in Sydney, the following set of steps should be followed when replacing a quiet car horn:

If the horn of your vehicle is sounding at a lower volume than what it’s intended, then you have to pop up the hood of your car and check its current condition. In case the horn is overly quiet, then it can be possible that one of the horns (vehicles may have more than one horn) has stopped working and therefore will need to be replaced.

Once the horn has been located (which can be found on the radiator core support or behind the car's grille), it'll be easy to proceed with the replacement procedure. The horn of your vehicle will resemble a fuse, with a bunch of wires coming off it. Your duty should be to remove wire connectors and then pull the horn out of its socket.

Remove any connected spade jug & mounting bolt which may be attached to the wiring and thereby proceed to provide them with a good cleaning process before trying to reinstall them.

Once you’re done, proceed to activate the horn again. If it gets fixed, then you’re good to go. Otherwise, you may have to replace the horn entirely.

When Fixing A Car Horn That’s Not Sounding At All

The primary task that you need to perform is to check your vehicle’s fuse box to see whether the specific fuse that’s connected to your vehicle horn is working. In case you’re not sure where to find the fuse box, you can look at your car’s manufacturer manual for any added guidance.

Proceed to remove the fuse of the horn using a pair of tweezers or pliers. If you find the metal strip inside the fuse to be broken, then it means that the fuse has failed and therefore has become non-functional. Therefore, the same needs to be replaced as a result.

After replacing it, it’s time to activate the horn. If the horn works, then the problem is solved.

But, if the problem isn't with the fuse, then you have to check whether your car's airbag is interfering with the car's horn. To do that, you have to ensure that the airbag light is not illuminated on your vehicle dashboard. If the light is illuminated, then it means that the airbag has expanded and interfered with the horn's functioning. You'll then have to replace or fix your airbag, with the help of a professional mechanic.

Alternatively, if there’s no issue with the airbags, then it would be prudent to simply replace the horn right away, as it’s the primary culprit.
