Sacramento, California Welcomed Us with Warm Weather

A shooting, homelessness, and trash

As mentioned in my last post, we left Idaho to get away from the snow and with each day of travel we shed a layer of clothing. Our final destination of this first leg of our adventure is Newport Beach, California to attend the Hoag Classic, a PGA Sr. Tour of Champions tournament. Stay tuned or information on this event.

Normally, we stay away from traffic and the congestion of large cities, but our choices are limited for this trip. Thus, we landed in Sacramento last night. We had a reservation at Cal Expo for the night, a RV park at the site of the fair and other community events. Our goal is to avoid traffic during the heaviest times of the day. We parked early in the afternoon before rush hour. This morning we started after 11:00 a.m. and it is all smooth sailing.

We selected this RV Park using the app suggested by Jim Bannon, a friend from FB. In a future article, I will share some specific feedback about the Allstays APP. We have used it twice and are finding several of the feature useful. Stay tuned for this upcoming article if you are looking for a resource to find places to park when traveling.

Cal Expo advertises a large dog park, a bike path, restaurants within walking distance, and free Wi-Fi, — all amenities we wanted. Because the park is set up to host venders during events, it is little more than a parking lot but with the river and bike path near we were excited. Our dog and I immediately visited the dog park and were pleased to find some grass, trees, and benches. Dagney gave the area her seal of approval.

Once the motorhome was leveled and the slides were out, we started exploring. We pulled out our Jestson foldable, electric bikes and went for a ride. Adjacent to the RV park ran a 20-mile bike path that is bordered on the other side by a river. The first couple miles were awesome. Then the river dried up and was replaced by homeless encampments, still a beautiful ride on smooth asphalt but a little unnerving. I began to understand why the park advertised 24-hour security. During our 8-mile ride, we passed 3 police cars patrolling the area. Though we witnessed no problems, I can imagine there could be difficult times.

Within walking distance resided a strip mall, restaurants, and a movie theatre. As Randy and I walked to dinner at Pete’s Brewery, we noticed emergency lights about a mile in front of us and helicopters circling the area. Having an inquisitive mind, I checked the local news to find there had been a shooting. The news this morning shared this picture and headline.

5 Killed Inside Church in Arden Area of Sacramento County, Officials Say

It seems a father killed his 3 children, another person who was not identified and then himself.

The good news is that the roads were abundant with security patrols when we walked back to our RV. The remainder of the evening, we read and scanned current events on our phones. Though the receptionist when we signed in warned us that the Wi-Fi was poor, it accomplished everything we needed it to do.

Looking for a place to stay in Sacramento? Consider Cal Expo. It costs $50 per night, is quiet, and secure but there are some drawbacks to consider once you step beyond the gates.
