Oswego, NY. Oswego is a small city that lies right beside Lake Ontario in the Upstate NY region. The history is quite unique, and the atmosphere alone makes this city one of my favorites. The city is inviting and full of people who would love to fill you in on what Oswego has to offer. Let me fill you in on a little bit of what Oswego has to offer and what it means to me.

My ancestors came down from Massachusetts and settle along the waters of upstate NY, in a small town just outside the city of Oswego, called Scriba. Scriba is this quaint little town that lies just outside the southern end of Oswego and is filled with old farmland and trees as far as the eyes can see. I was born in the city of Oswego at the Oswego Hospital back in 1965. Much of my time growing up was spent in Scriba. My mom went to the Oswego School in the 1940's. Back then there was only one school which is now the high school.

Nestled in this small town of Scriba is a majestic area known as Scriba Park which holds this magnificent little beach area. The park holds many trees which provide shade from the hot sun. Under these grand trees are scattered picnic tables with grills that resemble hibachi’s sitting on steel posts that stand about waist high on an adult. This right there is what makes this park so special. It’s a warm inviting and small area where families who know about this little park can come and enjoy a nice summer’s day.

The City of Oswego holds many unique and inviting little shops, as well as a couple of older meat markets that still sit snuggled around the inner-city limits. There are plenty of great little restaurants to eat at, bars to visit and talk with the city people who are all more than willing to talk to you about their home and the activities that are going on in the city.

With Oswego Speedway settled right dab snug in the inner city of Oswego you can count on weekly races from all around the United States gathering to make the best of this racetrack. The racetrack is in memory of Jimmy Shampine (1941 –1982) who was one of the most successful super modified car drivers and dirt track modified stocks to race on the Oswego Speedway. The racetrack is one of the biggest events in the season. The Oswego Speedway is one of the best-known racetracks in Upstate NY from at least as far back as 1969.

The Oswego Hospital lies on the northern end in the city of Oswego and has been around since 1881 when a group of community members gathered for the soul purpose of putting together a hospital for the small city. Today Oswego Hospital has grown into a much stronger hospital for this small city it cares for.

As you pass through the city heading in any away from the water side you will find a great span of trees and large hillsides with green rich colored grasses. The countryside's are breathtaking in their beauty, feeling almost majestic with all of the wilderness around you.

Forte Ontario

The Lake Ontario forte is a wonderful place to visit during the summer months which lies along the edge of Lake Ontario and holds a grand history of its own. This was the point that the city which greeted the French ships coming in for trade in supplies. The forte built in 1727, was ordered by the governor of Oswego for the purpose as a weigh station for the French traders.

Off the shore of Lake Ontario in the city of Oswego is a light house that you can walk to if you are willing to walk out onto the break wall during good weather. Oswego River runs through the city and runs to the outskirts headed east to the next small-town of Fulton, NY and continues to run westward.

Unfortunately, the distance to any other city around there is quite a way away. Oswego stands off all by itself in the solitude of this grand lake of Ontario. The wind coming of this lake in the brutal winter months whips so hard it makes you wish you were anywhere else but there. The City itself is filled with excitement in times when events are going on or when college is in session. The college sits on the outer northern end of the city where students come from all over. When college isn’t in session Oswego is full of summer events for family fun. Oswego is a place to bring your family and enjoy the many offerings it has to share.

Oswego, NY can be a great place to visit. You can always find something to do. If you like lots of snow and blowing wind, then it would be a great place to live. The landscape around the city is beautiful, full of large hills and great countryside scenery. Then you have the solitude of the city itself. Oswego is definitely a place you want to get to know.
