The world is a phenomenal place. It seems that no matter which direction you walk, you are bound to come across something spectacular. This is the beauty of exploration. I always say that the days of travel are gone; nobody hitchhikes as they used to in the past. It seems easier to see the wonders of the world on our screens than to chase the taste of adventure. But, of course, the latter is more desirable. My goal is to inspire you to get out and view the world for its beauty, and I think I have just the destination for your bucket list.

The History

Aerial view of Lonar Lake

The Lonar Lake is a "saline, soda lake" in Maharashtra's Buldhana district. It is thought to have been formed by the impact of a meteor during the Pleistocene Epoch. It's a hypervelocity impact crater on Earth that's made of basaltic rock. The age of the Lonar Crater is estimated to be 52 thousand years. It was created when a meteor weighing at least 2 million tonnes collided with the planet at a speed of about 90,000 kilometres per hour. The crater has a diameter of 1.8 kilometres and a depth of 150 metres.

The lake's water is both saline and alkaline, and it is flanked by hills that are home to numerous intriguing temples. Despite its rarity, only a few people have heard of Lonar Lake, with the exception of natives and a few adventurers. Various sodas and salts are found in Lonar Lake. When the weather is dry, evaporation lowers the water level, and soda is gathered significantly.

The local Habitat

Ziziphus Spinosa

The hill slopes surrounding Lonar Lake are densely forested. Teak, bastard teak, Indian screw tree, and Pala indigo, sometimes known as dyer's oleander, may all be found in the savannah-like environment. Plants like the Egyptian acacia and Ziziphus Spinosa grow in the neighbouring shrub savannah. The "non-native Prosopis juliflora" can be found growing along the lake's edge. Agricultural objectives are carried out on the alluvial terrace in the northeast along the Dhara River. Maise, millet, okra banana, and papaya are some of the most often grown crops.

Brahminy Ducks

Lonar Lake is divided into two distinct areas that do not mix. Flora and fauna of the outer neutral region, which has a pH of 7, and the inner alkaline region, which has a pH of 11, are distinct. A wide variety of plant and animal species can be found in the lake. It is home to various permanent and migratory species; Black-winged stilts, Brahminy ducks, golden orioles, blue jays, red-wattled lapwings, hoopoes, tailorbirds, magpies, and swallows are among the birds that inhabit the area.

Barking Deer

The lake is home to a variety of reptiles, including monitor lizards, snakes, and scorpions. In addition, thousands of peafowls, chinkara, gazelles, langur, mongoose, barking deer, and various insects and amphibians make their home in Lonar Lake. This truly is an explosion of wildlife that once witnessed a horrific cosmic disaster.

Local sites to Visit near Lonar Lake

Ellora Caves

Tourists visit various locations around Lonar Lake throughout the year. Local UNESCO World Heritage Sites are close to the lake, including the Ajanta and Ellora Caves. Other notable sites include Daulatabad, Khuldabad, also known as the Valley of Saints, the famous Grishneshwar Temple, and the Pitalkhora caves. Because few people are aware of its presence, few people visit the lake itself. The city of Aurangabad is four hours away from this lovely lake. The road passes through scenic villages and paddy fields, offering a welcome break from the city's drab greyness.

Grishneshwar Temple

Due to the quicksand on the banks and the slippery walk, getting to this beautiful lake is a bit of a challenge. However, you can come upon temple ruins that insects and bats have colonised. For wildlife photographers, bird watchers, and bird lovers, the wooded region surrounding Lonar Lake is a haven.

The dangers facing Lonar Lake

Several environmental and anthropological issues are threatening this celestial wonder. Illegal excavating activities have caused the lake's underground water source to be contaminated. Tourist activities also harm the local environment. One of the lake's water sources are the perennial streams "Dhara" and "Sita Nahani." Locals, pilgrims, and visitors, on the other hand, use these waters for swimming, washing animals and clothes, and other domestic purposes. This lake is used to dispose of detergent-containing household garbage. Toxic materials such as pesticides and fertilisers are used in the agricultural fields surrounding the lake, polluting the water. The Lonar Lake environment is being harmed as a result of sewage being poured into the waterbody. The natural topography of the lake has also been affected by commercial operations around it. The lake will erode if the current trend continues.

If you're willing to put in the effort and let your wanderlust take you by the reigns, I am sure that Lonar Lake will fill any traveller's appetite plus more. As it stands, the lake is in danger and awareness is needed. There are only a few places on the planet as unique as Lonar Lake, so preserving it must be a priority. I see the might of the crater and think of the power that the meteor struck with makes you think of the dangers of the world and our position in the universe. Sometimes it's easy to forget that we are just a speck in the chaotic organism we call space. Lonar Lake represents things way out there, and that is where we should be aiming for.
