Our Summer on the Creek
While floating on the creek, two hummingbirds buzzed over the labelia on the closest bank and then flew in circles over our heads. I do not remember seeing hummingbirds on the creek before, but this was a summer like no other.

Turkey was something you ate at Christmas, and only vaguely registered as somewhere you could actually go.

We watched while the logs were licked and caressed and eventually consumed by the sinuous dance of the fire. Daring flames occasionally leapt out, and my skin reddened under the heat. Notes lifted with the smoke to drift over the small crowd, as the guitar player’s fingers lazily plucked the strings. We had come to the end of our time together; exploring the formation of this small island, clambering over rocks that had been bent, ripped, and pulled back into the depths only to erupt anew, all in a past beyond our sight.

Reaching the age of 52 might not seem like much of a milestone. but in my family, its like making it to the top of the mountain. Mum was sick for as long as I can remember, and the 3 of us, kind of had this thing in the back of our minds, that we needed to make it past 51, (the age that mum left us).

Even though she did not really feel like going outside, Amy knew it was a necessity. It was not for her. It was for them she was going. For their sanity. As she started getting too warm in her winter coat she was getting them ready as well. Amy started by putting his boots on and then his jacket. She did not have to do much for the other one. He was built for freezing cold temperatures.
