The Indian cricket team had a memorable 2021 in Test cricket. India started the year with an incredible series win against Australia and ended with a historic victory against South Africa in Centurion. Although the Indian cricket team could not perform well at the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, the Men in Blue won all the bilateral ODI series they played this year. After an eventful 2021, the Indian cricket team awaits a busy 2022. For the first time in a long time, the Indian cricket team will start the year with a separate captain for red-ball matches and white-ball formats. The T20 World Cup is all set to happen in Australia later this year. Fans will also witness the Indian cricket team stars in action during the IPL 2022 season.

So without further ado, let's have a look at the Indian cricket team's 2022 schedule. The Indian cricket team will continue its tour of South Africa in early 2022. They will play two more Tests and a 3-match ODI series against the Proteas. Here is the ODI series schedule :

  • January 19th: 1st ODI, Paarl
  • January 21st: 2nd ODI, Paarl
  • January 23rd: 3rd ODI, Cape Town

The BCCI selection committee is yet to pick India's squad for 3-match ODI series against South Africa. The series begins on January 19 but the team selection continues to be delayed. Lack of clarity on Rohit Sharma's fitness seems to be one of the primary reasons behind this delay. Let's see what they have decided on Rohit Sharma's fitness. The 3-match ODI series between India and South Africa is scheduled to start on January 19, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce the squad for the series. The selection committee was expected to name the squad on December 26, after the conclusion of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but the announcement continues to keep the fans waiting.

The Indian team had a memorable start to 2021 and it ended on a good note for them as well. The Indian side started with a win at The Gabba which also helped them to beat Australia 2-1 in a Test series. They culminated the year by noting up a Test match win at Centurion, becoming the first Asian team to win at the venue. In between Team India won at The Lords and at The Oval against England to achieve the highs of Test cricket. Losing the WTC final and an early exit from the T20 World Cup remains the team’s lowest point this year.

Looking forward to 2022, India are scheduled to play some tough games both at home and overseas. They will play under two different captains now with Virat Kohli leading the Test side and Rohit Sharma leading the white-ball side. Winning the T20 World Cup and the postponed fifth Test against England remains the two top priorities in Indian cricket next year. They will play some tough and competitive cricket both at home and in overseas conditions.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has postponed the Vijay Merchant Trophy U16 competition scheduled to begin on January 9, the spiralling number Covid-19 cases in the country forcing the BCCI's hand. The decision comes a day after the BCCI decided to relax the age clause for the year.

Earlier, the BCCI said it identified 60 players who were found to be above the threshold limit of 16.5 years in the bone test but confirmed that these players will be allowed to take part in the tournament as the exercise of bone test and the conduct of the tournament were undertaken late.

Here is the ODI squad for the South Africa series :

KL Rahul (C), Dhawan, Pant (WK), Ishan (WK), Ruturaj, Kohli, Surya, Shreyas, Venkatesh, Chahal, Ashwin, Sundar, Bumrah, Bhuvneshwa, Deepak, Prasidh, Shardul and Siraj.
