Do Female Golfers or Tennis Players Make More Money?

Do Women Make More Money in Golf or Tennis?

Do women athletes make more money in golf or tennis? That is an interesting question and this article will provide a definitive answer to that question.

Looking over the money statistics below for women golfers and tennis players, it's pretty clear that one sport pays female athletes a lot more money overall. Far more women in one sport make a lot more money than in the other sport. And far more women are able to make a living playing one sport than in the other.

At the end of the article, though, a relevant point is made about women who play tennis and golf for a living is made that all should keep in mind.

Number of Women Golfers and Tennis Players Who Make Over $1 Million a Year

Tennis: 35 to 40

Roughly 35 to 40 women tennis players each year make over one million dollars playing on the WTA circuit.

Golf: 10 to 17

Anywhere from 10 to 17 women golfers make over one million dollars each year playing on the LPGA Tour.

There are at least twice as many, and sometimes as many as four times as many, women tennis players each year who make over one million dollars vs women golfers. So, many more top players in tennis earn a lot more money each year than the top women golfers.

Number of Women Golfers and Tennis Players Who Make Over $100,000 a Year

Tennis: 200

Roughly 200 women tennis players each year make over $100,000 on the WTA circuit.

Golf: 100

Around 100 women golfers each year make over $100,000 playing on the LPGA Tour.

Twice as many women tennis players earn over $100,000 a year vs women golfers. So there are a lot more women tennis players at the lower end making a lot more money than women golfers at the lower end.

Indian Wells ($1.345 million), Miami Open ($1.345 million), Madrid Open ($1.348 million) and the China Open ($1.525 million in 2018). Five other events pay the woman winner over $500,000.

Number of Women Golfers Career Earnings Over $1 Million

  • 268

A total of 268 women golfers have earned over one million dollars in their careers on the LPGA Tour. That number is behind the 415 women tennis players who have earned over $1 million but women golfers at the lower end of earnings are not as far behind as women golfers at the high end when compared to women tennis players. Which brings us to the last point that must be made.

Women Tennis Players Make More Money but Women Golfers Have Longer Careers

The vast majority of women tennis player's careers are over by the time they are 30 and certainly by age 40. Women golfers can and do play competitively into their 40s.

Many women golfers have won events over the age of 40 and at least five women, Fay Crocker, Sherri Steinhauer, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Juli Inkste,r and Angela Stanford have won golf majors past the age of 40.

Overall, there is no question that most professional women tennis players make far more money than do equivalent women golfers. The one advantage women golfers have is that they almost always have much longer careers than do women tennis players.
