So, you’ve decided to give this financial coaching thing an extra look and are considering jumping into a coaching session. But the elephant in the room that you keep coming back to is that you have no idea what to expect.

Expectations for a coaching session should be deliberate and established upfront. You might even have some of that stuff that gives you anxiety just remembering from your childhood: homework.

Let’s give you an answer though as to what you should expect.

1. First of all, expect to be transparent and do a lot of talking.

There’s no better way for me to learn about your situation and your goals than to hear it directly from you. During the initial call, expect to talk a lot and not hear much from me. This isn’t me holding back vital information, but it’s truthfully just learning about you so I can coach you better in your specific situation.

Having a simple overview of your financial situation and some ideas on financial goals for your future will get us a good start.

2. After the initial call, expect some homework for the next session.

If you’re focused and intentional about this, we can set you up for success. But, you can’t go into it half-hearted and not giving it an honest effort.

I’ll probably be giving you some homework. It could be as simple as researching your checking account statement, or it could be complex such as putting together a list of five goals for your financial future. It won’t be as bad as your Calculus II homework from your junior year, but it will take focus and concentration.

3. Anticipate questions and a completely judgement-free environment.

Look it, we all make mistakes. We all also have a different approach to a lot of things in life. However, if you’re seeking financial coaching from me, there may be a few disagreements along the way. What you never will receive from me though is a chastising tone, condescension and demands. I’ve made plenty of financial mistakes, but it’s now my job to help you not repeat those mistakes and to grow your financial future and establish healthy financial habits.

If you choose this path, we aren’t going to be suggesting a Robinhood account or jumping into investing thousands of dollars with Tesla. That’s not part of what we do, because it’s not what we’re trained to do. Frankly, financial advising is also illegal for financial coaches, because we aren’t trained to offer financial advice in that realm.

When we get to that point though, we’ll get you connected with someone who we trust can assist you in those goals.

My goal is to help create a plan for your future. Personal finance is 10% head knowledge and 90% behavior, so it’s my goal to change that 90% so the rest is as easy as simply applying what you’ve learned.

I’m not going to come to you with a bunch of $100 words that only serve to confuse you and discourage you. It’s my job to make this as easy as it was to learn how to tie your shoes. It should be easy to change habits and make real life changes, it shouldn’t be like a root canal at the dentists office.

My promise to you is that your time and money will not be wasted. You will have a take away from our time together and you’ll have something you can apply to grow and create the life you choose, and not the life that chose you.
