The plan was very simple, work hard, be consistent, don't give up, and your business will prosper, right?

That was what I thought, and I wish someone had told me before I started my first entrepreneurship, which failed miserably. *Sad music of violins.*

But not everything is bad, since, as the quote that is erroneously attributed to Einstein suggests:

Failure is just another way to progress

- Not Einstein

Luckily for you, I will be the person who gives you these keys so that your business, entrepreneurship, or freelancing is successful. Some of these points seem obvious, but you will be surprised to learn that hardly anyone takes them into account, bringing their projects to an early end.

It's not all about working hard, sleepless nights, and having a Jeffrey Bezos post in your bedroom. You must play smart, have an effective strategy and know-how to identify the key points.

These are the 5 things you MUST do to make your business prosper.

Progress is not growing

Photo by Volodymyr Hryshchenko on UnsplashHindsight is a tricky thing; at the end of the road, it is much easier to see the rocks and potholes. Do not wait to make each and every one of the mistakes to correct them; although failure is part of success, save on mistakes and focus on growing.

Consistency and perseverance are very good values, but it is easier not to give up if you do not have to correct mistakes every five minutes.

Before making the article longer, I will quickly summarize it for you. The five keys are:

  • Focus on your customers
  • Know the field
  • Mastering the digital plane
  • Diversify
  • Build a team

Maybe you are reading that, and you think you have done several of those things very well, but have you done them all?

Serve your customers the best you can

I know that the slogan "the customer is always right" is outdated, and all of us who have worked in retail hate it.

Lately, we've been more aware that some clients are just plain jerks, and it's not worth defending them over your employees, which was very different before.

However, when you have your own business, you understand that without them, there is no money in your pocket, so you should do your best to make them feel comfortable and come back in the future.

My second business attempt took a totally different growth when I started having loyal customers who came back for more and even paid more than the agreed prices. This happens because they feel valued and cared for. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to believe that there are millions of customers for you and that losing a few will not affect you at all.

Study the competition

Photo by Jared Rice on UnsplashThis would not be step 1; it would be step 0. You don't go swimming with sharks without even knowing how the water is.

You must know the field in which you will be, what similar businesses or entrepreneurs offer and what makes you different from them.

You can look for inspiration, ideas that already exist, and give them a twist. It is enough to have a differentiating factor to stand out from the rest.

Social media matters more than the real world

It's 2021; it doesn't matter anymore if you are a carpenter or a typist; you must master social media to have a chance to emerge.

Currently, we must all be amateur digital marketers, since, at the beginning, you hardly have a team that manages your social networks. So you must do it, and you must do it well.

Having a good online presence, an attractive and functional website, and knowing how to use ads, that's all. If you put all that aside, you will hardly be someone.

Diversify diversify diversify

What does it mean to diversify? May you never depend on a single option in one thing.

You are a writer? Don't just depend on Medium.

Do you sell something? Don't depend on just one product.

Do you offer a service? Don't depend on just one way to monetize.

You are a complex and multifaceted human being, and you can bring those qualities to your business. Never put all your eggs in one basket.

I write on Medium and consider it my home, but I also offer services on Fiverr, I create content on my website, I made an ebook that you can buy on Ko-fi, and I have a Newsletter on Substack. I diversify styles, services, and platforms.

You can do it the same way, no matter what your area of expertise is.

Build a team as if it were your family

Photo by Mathias Jensen on UnsplashThe path of the entrepreneur does not have to be lonely, and it hardly will be. A mistake we all make is not choosing our team carefully. We don't want to have a Jobs - Wozniak situation.

You must be around capable and efficient people, but they must also have your same vision and values.

Being authentic and working close to the way you do things is the best way to make your business successful. Do not waste time and energy in discussions and differences with your team.
