As 2024 rolls around, so does my 33rd year on this earth and my third year of finding excuses not to enter a Vocal challenge. The never-ending cycle of pumping myself up to put my work out there and go out of my comfort zone is ending right here and right now.

In October this year I will be 44 years old. As an 80's child I was weirdly interested in stationery. I had 30 pen pals at one point, and my mother had to cut back on my stamps. My favorite part of school was writing essays. The words just poured out with my pen, I never had to think much about the content. I don't really know how good my stories were, but the teacher always seemed pleased. Growing up I had times where I wanted to write a book, to this day I never have finished writing one. I have started several books, but never got far before I started something else. With this in mind, I decided that 2024 will be the year I finish one. I will write with more purpose, I will reach my goals and be more serious about making a career of writing.

Hidden. That’s how I’ve been for a long time. I joined Vocal a year ago as a first step in emerging from the shadows - shadows of tragedy, shadows of doubt, and standing back in other people’s shadows saying to myself not now but later. This year I’ve flipped that to now, not later. I can no longer wait to get my writing out into the world. Now is the time to reach out, to connect, to find a community.

It’s a time of celebration of what was and what will be. For many people, the best way to start the new year is by kissing the one they love. Truly, a great way to start the new year. We pair this with resolutions, promises of change to make this year better than the last.

The human spirit is like a tenacious vine, capable of winding its way up even the roughest walls and reaching for the light. Just as a vine doesn't shy away from obstacles, we shouldn't shy away from the challenges that stand between us and our goals. The path to achieving our dreams is rarely smooth, but the lessons learned and the strength gained along the way make the victory all the sweeter.

The image of a vibrant flower thriving amidst adversity, pushing upwards even through cracks in the pavement, speaks volumes about the human spirit's potential for personal growth. We, like resilient flora, can blossom into our best selves, even in challenging environments. Yet, simply surviving isn't enough. Just as a flower wouldn't be content staying nestled in the shade, we shouldn't limit ourselves to merely "getting by." Personal growth isn't just about persevering; it's about actively stretching towards the sunlight of our full potential.

In the hot afternoons of May and June, between the blows of hot winds, you can see a crowd of people from a distance in some shadowy corner of the streets and alleys, deserted by the weather, and understand that it is selling a cold drink. There is a stall surrounded by people.
