What Is Senryu?
In the spirit of the ‘Snafu Senryu’ challenge, I did a little digging into the art of Japanese poetry to understand a bit of the history of Senryu, in hopes that it would inspire a few gems (spoiler alert—it did!) Senryu is a form of Japanese poetry that shares a common structure with traditional haiku but serves a different purpose. Like haiku, senryu consists of three lines with a syllable pattern of 5-7-5. Unlike haiku, however, the form is more focused on human nature, rather than the natural world. Senryu often delves into the humorous, satirical, or ironic aspects of daily life and the human experience.

In shadows significant, I meandered forward,A mission to consider my interior worth,Through valleys low and mountains high,I searched for reality under the sky.A journey soaked with secret,A mission for self-disclosure,The way was upsetting, the way jumbled,Anyway, some place inside, I held no fear.Through primers that attempted substance,I sorted out some way to make myself feel quite a bit better,In facing malicious spirits, questions, and fears,I found the fortitude to dry my tears. The self I searched for, a far-fetched treasure,Under the layers, significant inside,A valuable stone delivered in strain's fire,A spirit that could climb much higher. With each step and each fall,I found my inspiration, stood up tall,The trip drove me to a spot,Where I embraced exceptional speed.Besides, as of now, with keenness in my step,I've found the self I can't hide away,The trip's end, a crisp out of the plastic fresh start,A more significant love inside my heart.
