Holiday Hijinks Challenge Winners
They happen every year at the exact same time. No matter how much you've changed, where you live, how you feel about Uncle Ned— like a big wheel, they always come back around. Holiday dinners. Those moments when everyone sits around the table, shares a few laughs and makes new memories. They are the perfect (or worst) time to take stock of the past, to think about the future, to ask your mom why she loves your sister more or your dad why he pushed you to play basketball when all you wanted was to play the flute.

Lilly was grateful to finally see the edge of her driveway after another long, horrendous day at the office, and an equally miserable drive through the traffic nightmare known as Highway 11. It had been a week from hell, and the only thing delaying her from the sweet elixir of her favourite Moscato, was parking the car and getting in the house.

A writer's creative journey is never linear. Just like our characters, we experience everything from curiosity and excitement, to self-doubt and despair, only to restart the cycle a few days - or sometimes hours - later. Sound familiar?

Yesterday, I published my 100th story on Vocal: a recap of my winning submissions from a contest I entered over the summer. The Behind the Vision contest coincided with the Fantasy Prologue Challenge and my Vocal debut. In the sixish months since, I've learned a lot of things about the platform, the people, and the prizes that motivate so many of us to pour our souls out, six hundred words at a time. I'd like to take a moment to share that knowledge with any newcomers considering a Vocal+ membership and those veterans who may feel frustrated and unseen.

My name is not Radish, but it's been my nickname since I could remember. Papa is partly responsible for it. I was born with perpetual flushing cheeks, and Papa couldn't help but find them the most adorable thing in the world, kissing them or pinching them. Later we found out the red patches on my skin were caused by rosacea. So, Radish stayed.

Introduction Earlier this year I was looking at my profile, and as I am so laconic, I believe that I don’t have to say much about myself because most people find me uninteresting and boring ( although if you are reading this you are among that select elite who believe I have something worthwhile to say or you stumbled here by accident, whatever I now have your attention).

Vocal Curation TeamPublished about a year ago in ResourcesWhy "Warrior Nun" needs to be your next binge watch
Warrior Nun is one of the best Netflix originals the streaming giant has to offer. When I began watching its first season in July 2020, I had zero expectations going into it. I simply saw two words that I never associated being together and thought "huh! I wonder what kind of warrior shenanigans these nuns can possibly get into?"

These are my thoughts as I sense a presence beneath the fog of the forest. Long have I listened, but this thing is different, and it is no making of ours. The trees tell me of a child. It has come from beyond the land, with no roots to follow, and no tales to whisper among the leaves.

The Anarchy of a Haiku Challenge
Vocal Media has taught me many things through the poetry challenges of the past two years. First, I learned the traditional form of a Shakespearean Sonnet and drove myself quite mad counting syllables, creating the rhythm of Iambic pentameter, and stressing every other syllable. I worked hard. Then, low and behold, the winning sonnets broke all the rules. What?

Heavy droplets of rain fell as a sudden storm ravaged the colony of Japre. People rushed inside their homes, their children, wives, husbands, and parents in tow. One man stood alone in a field on the outskirts of the colony, looking to his crop of underberries before the rain washed them all away. The fickle plants were the only thing that could grow on the planet’s muddy surface. Storms raged on and on, providing only brief respites in between outpour after outpour of heavy rain. It was the last sowing of the season, he had to make it work.
